Cameras don't stop crime, they just move it around the corner.

And help bring criminals to justice. That too.

Public enemy #1's been on camera for years, and he hasn't been brought to justice.

Obviously a terrible idea.

I'm starting to think I'll live in Chicago for a while...and then move to Dublin or something...before the country goes completely Soviet and never lets us out in order to "protect" us.

Public video surveillance is alarming bullshit.

That video surveillance is so prevalent in the UK is a sad testimony to the decline of civil liberties in the country that invented them. Yet another hysterical, Daily Mail-driven romance with the government's capacity for punition.

Are you guys all fucking insane?!?! Surveillance cameras are an absolute necessity, without a doubt!

Honestly, as a UK resident, my TV viewing would plummet without these essential street cameras. The only thing I tune in for these days are the numerous TV reality "street crime surveillance" programmes where we get to see pissed-up morons knock the shit out of each other in Cardiff or Manchester city centres.

Usually with the Jamie Theakston or Ross Kemp narrating in the background.

In all seriousness, mixed blessings. You're all debating the various aspects much more intelligently than I can (see above), so I'll leave you to it.

On top of that, they don't work. In London, you're caught on camera 300 times a day, but the only reduction in crime from the cameras has been in regards to vehicular crime (and is basically the result of catching more car thieves rather than from deterrence)

The footage contributes to convictions for worse crimes than car theft. I don't know what your statement is based on but it seems very generalised and emotive. I have first hand experience that says you're wrong.
No, it's a literal, statistical fact. They've served as witnesses in convictions, certainly, but the fundamental truth is that London's closed circuit surveillance cameras have been a miserable failure at their primary intended function, resulting in statistically insignificant reductions in violent crime, while improving street lighting could cut crime in an area by 20%. (UK Home Office studies)

My "generalised and emotive" statement is based on the fact that I've actually studied this crap.
