I've always found that one a conundrum as well. It seems to be a British thing, in New Zealand you'd never call an Indian "Asian", especially since technically a person from the Sub-Continent is Caucasian.
When I first got to the UK I was working in an office and a colleague told me to go and ask the Asian guy at the back for such-and-such, I spend quite a while looking for this Asian guy... only found him when I asked the Indian guy where the Asian guy was... Needless to say, there were a few funny looks exchanged.
Oh, and
1st Japanese
2nd Authentic Chinese
3rd Vietnamese.
Bottom, Anglo-Indian, horrible stuff.
But the recent Indian chefs in the media here in the UK is making me reconsider my position:
