I've always found that one a conundrum as well. It seems to be a British thing, in New Zealand you'd never call an Indian "Asian", especially since technically a person from the Sub-Continent is Caucasian.

When I first got to the UK I was working in an office and a colleague told me to go and ask the Asian guy at the back for such-and-such, I spend quite a while looking for this Asian guy... only found him when I asked the Indian guy where the Asian guy was... Needless to say, there were a few funny looks exchanged.

Oh, and

1st Japanese
2nd Authentic Chinese
3rd Vietnamese.

Bottom, Anglo-Indian, horrible stuff.

But the recent Indian chefs in the media here in the UK is making me reconsider my position:

And thank you, Faiz, for vindicating me - the dirty looks I get from my fellow diners in Bombay Palace when they, forks in hand, see me grabbing up some mutter paneer with the bread ethiopian-style is enough to put a lesser man off his lunch.

But lunch is mutter paneer, so fuck all that noise. I eat on.

there's more to japanese than sushi..

good sushi is great (and cool looking), but for me it's anything miso based, flash fried (sweet potato tempura.. oh my), terryaki, or the wide variety of noodles (esp. buckwheat). OR a steamed brick of soft tofu with ginger sauce and those thin mushrooms.. fuck, i wish it was friday..

Umm, people from the Sub-Continent are not "Asian", here in the UK the expression is used pretty much so as to not offend Indians and Pakistanis, who for obvious reason aren't to keen in being labeled as one or the other. I'd always thought it seemed a slightly lazy, patronising colonial expression.

Anyhoo, in the real world skin colour should be regarded as about as relevant as eye colour.

Real Indian food is very good indeed and unfortunately almost impossible to find in the UK.
