I'm in a garage-punk duo with my brother, Danger Bros. I may have mentioned this before, I'm not 100% sure. Last time we were on stage, I introduced us after the first song as having "sprung fully-formed from the womb of the power chord."

That one's going on the Myspace for sure.

Yup. The point is, you end up getting forced in to a situation where you HAVE to write something about your own band - and it's one of the most excruciating experiences going. God I hate it. I think it's impossible to write something good.

Ugh even the thought of it makes me shudder. CRAP

I get that people want a reference point, and that being too abstract about it makes you an asshole, but this is a no win situation. Since people often tell us what they think we sound like, I decided to just post that instead and bring them together with the people who are always asking what we sound like:

http://ovipositor.com/sounds-like.htm

For the one sheet for our latest record I went even farther down that road by making a bunch of absurd comparisons in the "Rush having sex with Dr. Dre on crack" model:

We've been compared to everyone from Arab on Radar to Albert Ayler to The Fall to the Minute Men. And, of course, Sonic Youth, because if you play even slightly discordant rock, you re going to get compared to Sonic Youth. We strive to make propulsive music that rides the line between chaotic dissonance and driving rock and roll. The Shaggs meets the Sonics. The Magic Band covering James Brown. Ornette Coleman sitting in with the Mummies. The Hot Snakes going as Thinking Fellers for Halloween. Old Time Relijun channeling the Ex. Jandek via Mission of Burma. Sonny Sharrock playing with Federation X. It s a good time, just slightly wrong.

The end result is that the record's getting slagged off as unoriginal and too referential. What's funny about that is that people would site the bands we list, even when it's absurd to. We don't sound like Pere Ubu. We don't sound like Arab on Radar. We really don't sound like the Minute Men.

Always amusing.

Now I think the race is on to see who from this board can get the "picking up where the soup dragons left off" quote into print about their band.

My old band daddy's lap was once described by Altercation as "skate rock." We were instrumental so I guess it made sense, but it was amusingly surprising at the time because, once upon a day, I was a full-time skater who wanted to make "skate rock" (whatever that means) but I'd forgotten that until we got the review.

Back in the early '90s there was a band that had flyers all over the Belmont & Clark area that said something like:

Industrial and Rap: 2 great sounds that you never thought would come together, until now!

...or something like that.

I remember I couldn't decide which was worse, the fact that they thought that merging rap with industrial music in the 1990s was a novel and interesting idea, or the fact that their description basically ripped off a Reese's advertising slogan.

Yeah I know. I'm just kind of pissed that I can't remember what the name of that band was.

They had sort of a gothy-sounding name. That shitty flyer was for one of their early gigs and it was really trying for an urban/hip-hop look.

Later, they adopted a different graphical style for their posters, kind of geometric Celtic knot-inspired designs in monochrome dark color on black, kinda like Sisters Of Mercy album covers.
