I sang through one once, b/c it happened to be up at Chicago Recording Company, and I sounded like Billy Corgan through it. Which is not normal.

If you sounded like Corgan through it, then I'd be curious to hear what Corgan sounds like through it.

Money in the bank for a bunch of record industry assholes.

I think I put one about 2' in front of a Kick Drum once. It may have been a U89. I don't remember. It sounded pretty good.

i'd be pretty happy to have an 87. but if i had the mic locker they have at electrical, i'd never ever use it. they are kind of whiney.

Im not ahuge fan of the 87, esp on vox. I usally end up using a C12 or the sony 500. Everytime I record a vocalist they ask if they can use the 87. I normally say yes, take a picture of them signing in it , then record With something else. That way they have a picture of them looking like everyone else and a good sounding record.

There are a lot of vocals I record that sound best on dumb-looking dynamic mics. From time to time, signers get put off by their appearance. It makes me feel like I should somehow re-mount a Beyer M-88, or RE-20 into a hollowed-out Neumann body, and have a $8,000 price tag dangling from it. "See, you're singing into a Beatles mic! Sounds great, right?"

I used an Orban for its HP and LP filters, Ampex tube preamp, RNC... perfect. Phil.Collins.

I tend to only use 87's on guitar cabs (rarely) and far rooms on drums, that is if i don't have 67's or something else.I know how an 87 sounds, so I try to listen to the singer in the room first. But usually I find myself not liking it. I'll put whatever sounds good for the song up. That could be a microphone capsule in a glass starbucks frappuccino....Hyped gear is only hyped because you hype it yourself. Just put up whatever and make it sound cool.
