US: 1c 5c 10c 25c and rarely $1.
Japan: 1Y 10Y 100Y.

Plenty of coins there folks. No need for all the intermediate ones.

I don't understand. Surely having two pence coins cuts down on the amount of pennys and 20 pence coins cut down on the amount of tens and so forth.

Although saying that I am often annoyed at the amount of change I have at the end of the day but I put that down to me using notes/pound coins because I can't be bother to count out shrapnel in a busy shop.

I think it's the 1 pound coins that really do it. When i was in Ireland i was weighed down by all the 1 euro and 2 euro coins i was inadvertently collecting. The smallest paper euro denomination being the 5 was *really* annoying.

I think this is why dollar coins will never catch on in the US--paper dollars are simply more convenient in terms of sheer mass.

I dunno man...i try to use exact change anywhere i go, or barring that, do what i can to get paper back instead of coins. Like, if something costs $4.25 i'll tender $5.25 to get the dollar bill back. That sort of behavior really wouldn't matter in Europe except to make the math easier.

No no, I do this a lot in the UK. I think it's maybe just because foreign currency brings out the idiot in me. I think 'oh shit, don't hold up this queue by counting out your shrapnel so you get a note back. Remember, you're a guest in these peoples' country. You don't want to draw any heat, they might think you're a terrorist'.

We know you're a terrorist. Re: You talk funny.

We're just trying to figure out if the Law is On Our Side if we get our guns out. (We know God is, but he's not passed the bar exam yet.)

I've seen enough films to know that everyone 'packs heat' over there.

I called everyone 'sir' in an attempt to stay on your good sides.
