When I was really young, say 7 years old, I was on a soccer team. This was in the 70s, so I guess the sexual revolution was still happening. You know baby boomers as parents...envision bad news bears with soccer combined with the fervor of that cosmos movie...

Anyway, soccer was kind of getting popular and people were buying shit to show their support. mini soccer balls that hang from the rear view mirror, bumper stickers...there were also loads of literature being published at the time, trying to educate people about the sport. The game itself is very different than sports that we are familiar with. no stoppages, the size of the field, the layout of the field, the game being split into two halves. In fact when I first started playing, the adults inexplicably split the game into quarters, like basketball. why? I guess it helped their little brains conceptualize the sport a little better.

Whenever we traveled to other towns to play other teams we'd sometimes see a very popular bumper sticker attached to either a large tricked out van, or a lincoln continental. It read: "Soccer players do it for 90 minutes."

At the time, we played 15 minute quarters and I was 7 so I didn't really put it together. I knew that pros played for 90 minutes and I knew what sex was etc., but the duration was a little beyond me so, I think I thought it was about sex, but because it was so overt/crude/obvious I decided that it really was one of these soccer propaganda things extolling the sport of soccer and how it was better because they played for 90 minutes instead of just 60 like basketball, hockey etc. Tell you the truth, I'm still not sure.
