That's what she's saying.
It seems like a stretch, but I'd believe it. At least she was in denial about it.

I guess the chamber was hidden behind a built in book case with a numberpad combination.

if she was in denial then she knew about it. hard to believe this went on for that long without her knowledge.

lots of moms lie about their husbands fiddling with daughters. it's very very sad.

The father arranged a cover-story that the girl had joined a religious cult. He had her write letters, in her own hand, telling her family not to look for her. This was concocted well enough to fool the police. The children that were 'adopted' were found with notes, which again he forced his daughter to write, saying that she couldn't care for them within the cult.

There have been some accounts of the father from other, grown up family members: that he ruled the family with an iron fist, that he beat them as children, that they used to say that "one day he'll kill one of us". I have no problem with the idea that his wife believed whatever he told her to believe.

This man managed to hide his daughter in his basement for twenty-four years. He was horribly, wickedly, horrendously good at this shit. Conning his wife would have been a piece of piss to him.

I am torn on how I feel about these women. I know humanity has had a culture of opression for most of our history, but this is the 21st fucking century and things should have changed. One of my good friends was repeatedly raped by her father, and her mother knew at some point but was too soused to do anything about it but eventually divorce him. I hate that old broad almost as much as the scum dad.

That's what I'm also struggling with when I think about this... no matter how hidden or soundproofed or whatever that the basement dungeon was... I mean apparently he must have spent significant time down there whether doing horrible things, or doing routine basics like bringing them food, etc.

"OK, wife, I'm going to go work in the basement now - don't come down, OK?"

"Uh, OK husband." (thinks to self "Boy I guess that husband of mine sure likes to tinker for hours at his workbench down there... a lot")

It kind of blows my mind to think of 24 years worth of conversations like that, and she had no clue anything was fishy?
