You need to hear it on record, through giant headphones, its not a "song" record its a "sound" record, it won't hit you all at once with a catchy hook, it pours into your skull like lava...

that being said I am not a huge uber-fan of this record, but when I am in the right mood it hits the spot...

Yeah. I just tried listening to Ben's copy of "Loveless" and it sounds like background music that would have been playing in a bar where some personal life drama broke loose when I was 19. I wouldn't have liked the music then either, but it sounds like that era of soundtracks to coming of age dramas.

I dunno. MBV is too cheesy for me, I guess. It's too intentionally artsy.

and they made it listenable. unlike your typical sonic youth, polvo, etc "angular" stuff where the strange noises were part and parcel of the songwriting, mbv's noise was wrapped around fairly conventional pop songwriting. i think that's one of the things that made them influential: you could make a reasonable attempt at applying their style to your own songs.

I've never known anyone who didn't care for it on the first listen, only for it to grow on them later.

Because they write good songs, play loud as fuck, and are fun to watch.
That puts them about 50 miles ahead of most bullshit people get aroused for around here.

After owning Loveless for 15+ years I continue to hear new things. Like the drums/rhythm in "To Here Knows When".

I like most everything by MBV, but then in 1992 I also thought some of my tapes sounded better after sitting on the dashboard of my car in 90+ degree for weeks on end... so I'm probably predisposed to liking them.
