Having said that, I did just get called 'hippy' on a bus. This was despite the fact I was holding a record by Canadian thrash 'legends' Sacrifice. But then, it was in Catford and that aint exactly a metal town.

I donated my hair to Locks of Love once. Apparently your hair has to be a certain length so they cut almost all of it off and I ended up with about 1/2" of hair all over. Really not a good look for me. For being such a short lady, I looked pretty thuggish, I think.
Personally, I LOVE your long hair. But I do understand that shorter hair looks tidier. And I think that despite the fact that me & Burun like long hair, I think that most ladies like the clean look.
Also, always remember that it WILL grow back.
