I have lived most of my life west of the Mississippi, and much of it on the coast. Unfortunately, I've never heard yellowjackets referred to as Meat Bees.
One of the local cycling clubs is called
the yellowjackets, because that's the common term out here. But from now on I'm going to call them the meat bees. Much more menacing.
And entirely different from wasps. Please.

Very small bees that will buzz around and try to land on you, attracted by the smell of sweat.
