I like most of what I've heard from Mr. Smith...but I haven't heard much.\
I always thought him being the indie rock poster-child for sad bastard tunes was kind of ill-fitting. There are people way more deserving of that distinction.

there in lies the problem...
No, there's no problem.
I'm tired of people trying to convince me he's a genius or whatever. He may very well be, but to my mind he's just retreading Nick Drake territory - poorly.
And Nick Drake was pretty amazing. Nick Drake does it for me, and Elliott doesn't.

i miss him, in the sense that i never did get to see him (realize his full potential). he would have done a great 'burn to shine' house performance.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Elliott Smith doesn't move me, despite being pretty and well-written. His music has a "by the numbers" quality about it. And there's too much of a Beatles influence, which never sits well with me.
Mr. Smith and I both attended Hampshire College at the same time, both studied philosophy, and never met. How does that happen?

Funny, I'll reverse that completely - Nick Drake leaves me cold, while Smith has always had his place in my ears.

I second Antero on this. Smith is a weenie I guess...but his music gets a pass from me. NC.

no problem. Mic City Sons was alright. and that ep.i haven't listened to them for ages. but if you're going to base your appreciation/enjoyment of his work on something, you're best to begin with the solo records, in order, and end with Heatmiser. i'd say...
