So it looks like they will be making tape again, but the supply chain may be a bit slow for a while. Still, don't pay stupid money for tape at the moment.

If that's how they treat their staff, it makes me a tad reluctant to give the cunts any more of my money.

What is demand like for their product? I'm not aware of the economics but if analog tape is being pushed to the side more and more every year by digital recording, they can't stay above water (and keep the same staffing level) forever.

Exactly! These guys were left behind from Ampex, who saw tape based media as a dead end and decided to pursue mass-storage digital systems based on random access media. This is not an option for Quategy, as it is unlikely they could compete with the asian market for broad digital storage devices, or the already established broadcast specialty market. They make tape, and that's all they do. If their market base is half of what it was 5-10 years ago, how are they supposed to stay solvent with the same staff levels of 5-10 years ago? My guess would be that their desire to be a good employer, and not get rid of anyone, is what may have gotten them in this mess in the first place.

In the recent days, it has been reported that the Quantegy factory has shut its doors and ceased production. I have received many phone calls aksing for more information on the situation. At this point, it has been very hard for me to seperate the facts from fiction, but this is what I know is true.

1.) Quantegy has closed their doors, and has temporarily layed off their staff pending restructuring.
2.) Quantegy has NOT filed for chapter 11, as reported in many articles.
3.) Plans are in place to restructure the Opelika facility, to produce profitable tape lines and hard drives, possibly under a new brand name.
4.) Last year, Quantegy audio tape sales alone reached 14M, with total sales of around 30M.

Then later, Joe posts:

I got my information almost directly from the President of Quantegy. The President of Quantegy sent a message to US Recording Media, who is the largest seller of tape in the country, basically saying what I said above.
