To actually take the necessary steps to get truly fit is gonna have an impact on our social lives. Which is pretty sad if we're honest, but that's another debate...Social life or fitness? It's barely a question...Why is that?Because going out and getting fucked up with your friends is really fun. Being able to say that it only takes you 15 seconds to make a bowel movement isn't such fun. That really depends on your social life...and if you have neither? ah, the glorious conceits of youth...

Exercise doesn't have to be at the expense of a social life. The most effective way to make exercise count is to set your daily life up so you're physically active within it, without thinking too much about it or dreading it because it's yet another demand on you.Unfortunately, I'm learning this the hard way. I had a way easier time regulating my weight when I lived in a walkable neighborhood, walked to run errands, and enjoyed my daily evening constitutional-- it wasn't a chore, it was "me time" where I could get the fuck away from everyone's drama for an hour. These days is the exact opposite, and right now I'm so sedentary I can't control jack shit no matter how I diet. To illustrate further, I ate my way through NYC for a week and dropped 5 pounds, thanks to all the walking. We'll be moving in the next month or so, and it's gotten to the point where walkability is a *major* priority.

I found this site helpful - and it's free.http://www.sparkpeople.com/I like the food tracker. Even if you just track your food for a few days you will be surprised how much you didn't realize you were eating.I would also like to get down to the weight that is on my driver's license which hasn't been updated in 20 years or so. I think that works out to around a pound a year. Oh my!How about just a 5K run - that ends at Hot Doug's?!

Okay. After some consideration, here are some goals I've set for myself for the now.No soda. No microwave meals. No fast food. Don't carry ATM card during the day. Bring lunch to work. Exercise, at least twenty minutes of raising my heart rate, three times a week, whether that's taking a long walk or swimming riding my bike to the grocery on the other side of town or running soccer drills at the junior high school down the street. I'm going to schedule a physical for October 4th, which is my 44th birthday. I just weighed myself and I'm at 243. I'm not going to look at a scale until that appointment, but if I stick to the above I don't think two pounds lost a week is out of the question, which would put me at around 220 or thereabouts. I'm a bit over 6', and when I'm in shape my weight is around 205.Hardest is going to be the soda.

I can't do much about the not sleeping with my on-call schedule. But I'm up over 240 and I've been pretty disgusted with myself for a couple of years. Exercise is nil, food is whatever satisfies my craving for sugar and salt. So I'll take this on. I'll think about it at work tomorrow and post some goals. Updates as I go along, and I'll be looking forward to everyone else's too. Thanks for the push ringo, and good luck to yourself and anyone else who gives it a go.

Howdy,I unabashedly love cargo shorts and I wear them all summer long. But we're out here in the hinterlands, and these dumbs hicks don't know shit. For about 10 years or so I've been b/t 185-200 pounds. Right now, and for the past 3 or 4 years, I've been at 191, right on the nose. I'd love to lose ten pounds, but I don't know if this is in the cards. Here's my daily routine, and it has helped me simply MAINTAIN: At least and hour of cardio a day. AT LEAST. Usually 40-45 minutes of HARD cardio (where I rely on the surely-inaccurate calorie counter, and try to get it up to 550-650 calories). This is stair-stepped or elliptical. Then I over-eat at lunch, every single day of my life. Almost never eat meat at lunch, and usually I eat 2-3 salads (edamame, cabbage, sometimes potato, often some form of pasta salad). I drink very little soda and a lot of coffee and tea. All day long, at work, I'm drinking either tea or coffee. My soda has been almost completely replaced (outside of the occasional Vernor's) by La Croix fizzy water. Not for everyone--pretty much like the poor-man's Perrier. I then do, usually, 30 more min. of cardio, either on the stairstepper or bike, JUST before supper. Then I swim with my kid at night. Then I overeat again, right up till bed. Peanuts, dried berries, that type of thing. NEVER b/c I'm actually hungry. Probably b/c of other addiction issues I've had. I have ice cream (rarely very much) nearly every night. NOW, I am really lucky to be able to go to the gym twice a day, and still find time to swim. That is a huge luxury in my life, and I recognize that right off. I've only become interested in losing my gut recently, or trying out this CORE training shit. Overall, mostly healthy, with cholesterol around 200 and good BP. I don't drink at all, and haven't for a long while. That's the killer, right there. I don't feel winded walking up the stairs, which was my goal all along. Start small. Keep shit really manageable. My first month at the gym was like prison. Now I hate it, but only slightly less. I listen to Rush and Van Halen at the gym. No one on Earth would say I look 'in shape' at all, ever, but I feel good.
