I dont really listen to them anymore but they're one of the not-crappest bands ever.
When people talk about bands having chemistry, the pixies are a perfect example. Either they planned a thousand miniscule subtleties and idiosyncrasies or they just worked perfectly as a unit.

My theory is that these people read Kurt Cobain giving them kudos in an interview and felt obligated by their teenage adoration to validate the Great Man's taste(s). Why they didn't save this undue adoration for the Meat Puppets is beyond me. Like The Pixies invented that soft/loud dynamic or "quirky" vocals. It's like Devo without the soul
or the concept.
I'm with you, Angus. I don't see why people like The Pixies any more than They Might Be Giants. It boils down to one thing:

Finally hearing thoughtful people calling out the bullshit of the Pixies is one of the reasons I read this forum.
I've forfeited many lovely pairs of legs because of this opinion.

Trompe le Monde is the tops.
With Bossa-nova behind and Doolittle almost doing exactly it's namesake.
Then Little Surfer Rosa, You had a really nice art work.

While I could happily die and never hear them again thanks to fucking John Richards of KEXP, they started off good and became excellent, release by release... each one was better than the other. (Yes, I think Bossanova is better than Doolittle, which begins like a firestorm, then falls flat halfway through) Trompe Le Monde slays all.
Seeing them kick off their TLM tour in Ventura, CA with Pere Ubu opening in late 1991 was a concert highlight for me.
I can empathize with Jung, though.. I think I'm slightly younger than him, so I was just getting into all those bands he mentioned just as Pixies were breaking up.. however, I think he mentioned getting into the Amrep stuff as Pixies were getting started. A short amount of time difference, but just enough to skew perspectives.
The same way I feel about Weezer, Jung must feel about Pixies.
Still though, solid albums through and through... Not Crap.
