Oh my! confession time: aged 13 I made one of these by painstakingly cutting and filing (later sanding to make the second Z opaque) a thick sheet of clear acrylic in the school 'CDT' room (Craft, Design, Technology) over a succession of lunch hours. The key throwing routine was performed many, many times.

*hangs head*

Anyway! back to the good stuff - inspired by this thread, my latest Gemm transaction and final piece of the early ZZ jigsaw:

A steal!

"Cheap Sunglasses"
"Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers"
"Jesus Just Left Chicago"
"La Grange"

Not not not not Crap.

I forgive stuff like "Rough Boy" and "TV Dinners" which I actually like as songs but recognize as subpar entries in an otherwise high quality canon. "Velcro Fly", not so much.

Not Crap.
I make music/I also make pretty pictures

Original mixes of Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Tejas: purely great. These records are widely inspirational among the musicians I know, some of whom would surprise you, perhaps.

True. What was the deal with adding a million tons of reverb to the drum track?

Fuckers.

The original mixes of Tres Hombres and Fandango! just came out on CD. I think they sound pretty damn good though I'm still gonna hold onto my vinyl. Hopefully the original mixes of II, Tejas and I will be up soon.

The guitar solo in "Precious and Grace" is maybe my favorite solo of all time.

It's a toss up between 5ive Style and the Blue Meanies as to the bigger band pricks whom I have ever met.

In these bands' defense, people have told me that the 5S/BM band members are nice folks. Maybe they just had bad days. Maybe I unwelcomely trod upon their ground. But, man, let me tell you, they were some Grade A USDA Prime jerks those nights at Gabe's/Gunnerz oh so long ago.

On the other hand, ladies and gentlemen like Hum (including tour manager Chris Green), Silkworm, Pansy Division, The Regrets, Self, Run On, Wolf Eyes, The Watchers and Call Me Lightning make it all worthwhile. Actually, you know who sticks out in my mind as being a super special sweetheart to me? That Balty de Ley (sp?) from Menthol.

Of course, these people might be jerks who just happened to make a good impression in a limited amount of time.

And this is to say nothing of these bands' rock music.

This could be a good thread: Worst/nicest people with whom you have played shows.

This is kind of off topic and about 2 years late but...

I bought Tres Hombres for $3 today. It is my first ZZ Top record. I'm excited to listen to it. I came to the ZZ Top C/NC thread to check out what has been said since the forum is the reason I decided to give them a shot in the first place.

Anyway...in 5ive Style's defense, I drove somewhere between 12 and 14 hours to Chicago from South Dakota when I was in college to see them play. After the show I ran into Jeremy Jacobson and Bill Dolan and they were both friendly gentlemen. It somehow came up that I had traveled all the way from SD to see the show and that I was heading back immediately after the show. Jeremy said, "man that's ridiculous, you guys should really stay at my place".

I talked to Bill Dolan again at a Jeremy Enigk show a couple months ago and he was again a nice guy (even when I pulled the dick move of asking him what his previous band (Five Style) was up to).

I can't speak for these Blue Meanies. I'm not familiar with them and I've never had an offer to stay at their house.

Like I said...this was kind of off topic.

i have "fandango" and "rio grande mud." i got "rio grande mud" the same day i found "berserker" by scratch acid and a breaking circus record. that was quite a day. for breaking circus, scratch acid, and zz top i paid $11.

"fandango" i found in a crate of records sitting in a park. free great record!

the rest of the crate was shit. i got two steely dan records and the rest was reo speedwagon, kansas, journey, styx.

i got "thick as a brick" from that same crate too.

score!
buy my guitar. now with pictures!
