He has recorded some records that I count among the best ones I own. I really love "Joya" and think that's an underrated one.
When he released "Ease down The road" I did an interview with him and we discussed American politics, French folk music and what makes a genuine artist, it was uite an interesting conversation, especially the part where he got up during one of his sentences, took a leather cushion from the hotel room sofa, smashed it to the wall and sat back down on his chair, all the while continuing to answer my question.
A month or so later I saw him play, it was the German tour with both Matt Sweeney and Pajo in the band and they played a long, long show that took it's main influence from Lynyrd Skynyrd and was a total blast.

At various points during that time I talked to the promoter guy of his label and I'd have to say that he had me feeling pretty relieved I don't have to work with Mr. Oldham. (Or Chan Marshall, for that matter...)

Years ago I bought the 7" of Ohio Riverboat Song. It is without a doubt one of most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Then I bought an album (Arise Therefore?) and was bored to tears. So I decided to leave my relationship with Will Oldham at one perfect song. Maybe I'll try him again someday and feel an idiot for wasting years of my life not listening to him.

Brett Eugene Ralph wrote:What's even funnier is that, when I told that anecdote to Darren Rappa, he said, "Yeah, I was over at Will's right before he flew out to join that tour. He was pacing back and forth, waiting for an autoharp to arrive by Federal Express. Then, after it had come and he was ready to leave for real, he darted back into the house and grabbed a 'How to Teach Yourself the Autoharp' book off of his coffee table and tossed it into his bag."

i'd like to change my vote from not crap to not crap

I picked up Superwolf and love it, my first exposure to Bonnie Prince Billy/ Will Oldham. What are some recommendations for my next purchase, what is his best Palace record?

Superwolf is exceedingly great. As is "the Greatest Palace Music" where he rerecords the best of his palace songs as upbeat country songs with a Nashville backing band. It is something you eaither love or hate, and I love it. I See a Darkness is also very good and darker in a more traditional Oldham style.

I'm resurrecting this, just because I'm feeling really Will Oldham today, and the All Tomorrow's Parties story is funny.

Not crap.

Absolutely, comprehensively, entirely, enormously, facefuckingly NOT CRAP!

West Palm Beach!
Gulf Shores!
Come In!
Disorder!
The Weaker Soldier!
New Partner!
You will miss me when I burn!

fuck I haven't even begun. So uncrap that I'd like to find those who voted crap and give them a hiding.

Stunned nobody's mentioned Joya, thats a fine album. His cover of Brokedown Palace is amazing. I haven't seen an easier C/NC.
