Not crap, straight up.

bigc wrote:I know Prince is a talented man. He is a talented guitarist and an accomplished songwriter.

I also know that I have no patience for a catalog of nearly a bajillion songs, all devoted to being sexy, sounding sexy, objects that are sexy and sexiness in general.

Crap.
You're just like his mother. Never satisfied.

Earlier, I wrote:I was at a late party a bit ago; a girl there had entered a contest and won. She and a friend were being flown to LA to have a private concert with Prince. I couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks, and thanks to this thread, I'm now back to obsessing.

I have an update to this story.

The girl who won the contest was flown to LA to have a private concert with Prince. Of course, there were other people there, some of whom were celebrities of the icky caliber (Sharon Stone, some other chumps, you get the idea).

As the girl and her buddy got drunker and drunker, they set themselves to figuring out what the funniest thing they could do would be. The kids were brooking no slouch: this had to be the absolutely muthafuggin ferniest gotdang thing they could pothibly do. They decided that this, the pinnacle of all things funny, would be to go up to Bruce Willis and act like they thought he was Billy Joel.

They failed to actually fulfill this height of funny. Kind of like that daisyfucker, Shackleton.

Absolutely not crap even with all the crap.

I have a dvd bootleg live @ the ritz in paris from the dirty mind tour that is mindblowing.
The band, the songs, the performance and the man himself kicking ass all up and down the stage. truly a sight to behold.

If anything, his performance reinforces my utter disgust at what passes for live r&b funk these days.
ChoCko is back in town!

Yes. Sweet Lord, what a great fucking record. I always think of Dirty Mind and that first Ramones record as about as succinct and complete as the long-playing record format got. No filler.

Another thing I appreciate about the lil' genius is that he puts out records all the time -- they seem to come pretty fast and furious, which makes it somewhat easier to gloss over that (years-long) string of bad jazzbo shit he was into.

I have not heard his new record, but Black Sweat seems pretty good.

Also: he is very funny, has a great screen presence, and has always vaguely reminded of Charlie Chaplin...

Prince '79-87 = Bowie '69-'77 or Zeppelin '70-79 or anyone else who just did a string of genius, amazing albums which always changed but were always a treat to hear for the first time. Just for that, Not Crap. I have all his stuff up to Sign O' The Times (which I only half like) and it is in my lifeblood. I was a fan from 1999 on, always buying the records when they came out...I remember 'Parade' originally freaked out me and my girlfriend, but now it's one of my 3 favourite Prince records. The other 2 are Around The World In A Day and Dirty Mind. I've been listening to Prince, the 2nd album a lot lately. I just love all the wicked vocal riffs and stops and starts at the end of "It's Gonna Be Lonely". Pretty awesome.

I read that new biography recently....by Alex someone? It's okay. The two new pieces of information I really dug were when he was first courting Warner Brothers and wanted to produce his own record and play all the instruments, his 'audition' consisted of recording a demo of "Just As Long As We're Together" in a 16 track recording studio....the whole thing, in an afternoon. Recording the drums, bass, keyboards, a few horns, guitars, vocals, and mixing. In front of 2 guys with suits. 19 fucking years old. Damn!

The other revelation was Prince complaining about R.E.M. "What the hell is that? They look like a bunch of farmboys!"

NOT CRAP, if for no other reason than how eccentric he is, but he writes amazing music too so shit he's in.

i'm kinda on the fence and still not quite sure what so many people are flipping over.

i realize that andre from outkast bites prince heavily and i can see why people flip over him, but i feel he has a certain playfulness, humor and charm i don't really get from prince. prince seems focused on conveying maximum megalomaniacal sour-faced sexy.
