yeah, that's how it works! i have a P2, i like it, and i refuse to get caught up in the obsessive audiophile logic of "since i'm spending $700, might as well spend $1000; since i'm spending $1300, might as well spend $1700.."

(and btw, it's my understanding VPI turntables are no longer available in the states, though their way cool record cleaning machines are).

That isn't true.

You get what you pay for.

I looked at the Project 1.2 and thought it was a really nice turntable, but it was priced at $420 while the Rega P2 was $490, so I figured I may as well spend the extra bucks and get the Rega, which really is a more solid piece of gear.

It also sounds better. Yay! Now for the fun part.

Buying records...Wheeee!

Anyone from Chicago familiar with Stereo Exchange on Western and Lincoln? http://66.166.111.117/

I brought a couple receivers--an old 70s Sansui and a late-80s Sherwood--in to be repaired back in November. Fortunately, they fixed the Sansushi right away. But they didn't have a part for the Sherwood at the time. The dude doesn't keep regular hours. So when I finally got around to following up, the place had been besieged by Noah's flood or something.

I left repeated messages and emails with them that went unanswered. Their web site says they had water damage in their building, which shut them down (which I assume wiped out the Sherwood). Fortunately, it was a receiver I wasn't using anymore and was just getting it cleaned up in case I ever had a need.

I got the feeling this place was a front for something else (The rent has to be too much given how the neighborhood has been overtaken by LPTs.).

So I was just wondering if anyone in this forum has had dealings with the place.

Instead of starting yet another turntable thread (there are tons) I thought I'd just hop on the end of one with my problem.
I'm looking for advice on purchasing a new turntable. I have about 6-700 dollars to do this with. Any search of turntable on here brings up people all shouting the praises of Rega...great, if you can get it? On eBay it is 90% Rega P1s for $350.00..are these that great? That's about all I can find in my price range.
Also contemplating a Music Hall MM5 turntable ( http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_ ... 7&section= ). It comes with a Goldring G1012 and Goldring cartridges seem recommended around here. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
