You have to buy the actual key (it's like a flash drive) and it's $30-something. Unless it's a license that just goes on your computer.

I think it's just a computer license - I haven't installed it yet but I got an EQ on a free week and after I installed the ilok license manager it worked fine, the license was on my account without paying. iLok is probably stealing my soul or making me infertile or something, but I got a pretty good EQ out of it.

not free, but I've been using Audio Professor to host VST for live processing lately. It works well, but a few plugins have made it fail, that could be the plugins fault though. I had to use it recently in a pinch because a surprise rap dude at a corporate event insisted on having Auto Tune for 2 songs and the rental unit we had showed up broken. Saved my ass. Good for hosting synths and plugin chains for noise making too.http://audiostrom.com/

As far as the Soundtoys plate reverb plug-in, they send two licenses - one that can go on an iLok and another that can go on your hard drive. So you don't need to have an iLok, just and iLok account and the license manager software.U-he Tyrell 6 is a great free soft synth even though some settings are really CPU intensive.Voxengo Span is a nice spectrum analyzer.

Google has created a cleaver panning VST for VR that works pretty well. Sounds like, listening through my monitors, it uses a combination of volume and pan changes mixed with some introduction of phase shifting and some ambiance to really direct the sound location. Looks fun to play with. It is available as a VST. I just downloaded it, but havent had a chance to play with it yet.https://www.blog.google/products/google-vr/resonance-audio-multi-platform-spatial-audio-scale/https://github.com/resonance-audio/resonance-audio-daw-tools/releases

The thing that seems to spike CPU usage with it is using multiple voices per instrument--but it's still great.
