Incredible, frightening and powerful band. Not crap in the slightest. 'Frigid Stars' scared the shit out of me the 1st time I heard it, but I was there to buy both 'Barely Real' and 'The White Birch' on the day of release.
Good to see them receiving such a favorable response in this thread, as they are (still) criminally overlooked. Imagine if S*int had made two incredible LP's as well as an EP.
Oh, wait a minute.

I looooved Codeine. Hugely influential on my own writing. I saw them open for Pavement in the Slanted & Enchanted days, and they blew those sloppy headliners off the stage. They were probably the first really slow moody band I ever saw live, and I loved them.
(PS: Pavement were better at subsequent shows.)

Someone asked what happened to those guys.
Steve worked for Peter Vallone for a looong time. I'd see him every now and again at community board meetings (Vallone is my councilman) and always be sort of amused/kinda horrified at how things turned out for us (the horror was more on my end.)
Now he works
here.

Ten years ago I felt the need to write a letter to the band to tell them how much I loved their music. This is what Stephen replied:

so not crap. i listened to frigid stars every freaking day of my sophomore year of high school. it was my after school ritual like milk n' cookies--get home, crawl under the covers, and listen to the whole album before dinner. not a very healthy habit i guess. but i was just madly in love with that record.
when i heard the white birch about 6 months later at first i was kinda disappointed. and Robert pointed out the metal thing; he was going to put a codeine song ("wird" i think) on his "metal that's not, kind of" tape. but it's grown on me since...but frigid stars will always have a place deep in my heart. aw.
i really wish they'd hung around longer, because the follow up bands i'm still not nearly as keen for. oh well.

Listening to some Codeine.
"Broken-hearted Wine" to be exact.
Doesn't work as well in summer! Dammit.
Still awesome.
