I tried cleaning the diaphragm, replacing all the foam, and touching up all the solder points before I gave up. I figured it was a diaphragm issue.

Disclaimer: My opinions are only valid in a live context, usually in a 500-2000 capacity room with a decent pa.I do not like the D112. The Beta52 is passable for rock stuff. The Audix D6 is only usable if you are micing a metal or modern pop-punk band. I used the M88 once and liked what I heard.I am a huge fan of the EV N/D868. I have no idea why more people do not use them. Yes, there is a bit of a modern voicing but not nearly as drastic as any of the others. They take additive high eq well without becoming clicky.Jon

He said that 98% of the time when they clean/replace the foam, the diaphragm gets ruined in the process. So, the quote they give people for refoams always includes a new diaphragm, and if they happen to not need to do it, you save $150 and get stoked. I sent mine off to them and got it back a few weeks later.Lesson learned: not much point in buying a vintage RE/PL20, because you'll have to turn it into a brand new one pretty soon. Why do mic companies use foam that disintegrates so easily? I took all the foam out of every EV635a I own and just use a pop screen if I need to spit into one. I'll take the RE20 apart soon and see if it is something obvious.

I've spent some time with the D112, RE20, Beta52, and D6. I've pretty much settled on the D112 and RE20. D112 for just a touch 'bigger than life' and RE20 for more natural. The Audix takes the all-boom-and-click concept to an insane level. Check out the frequency response on one of those things some time, from the bottom of the mid cut to the top of the presence peak is almost 20dB. A lot of live sound guys out here love them, and I get the attraction. If you want a super-hyped cannon of a kick drum sound it pretty much does it out of the box. I used one for a while when I was doing a lot of death metal shows. They are good for that. The Beta52 is somewhere between the D112 and the D6, but seems to have the worst qualities of both to my ear. I really don't like those things.

D112 - Never find a way to get a good attack out of this mic , too much mud for me, I think the low end is too resonant with this oneATM25 - It works with me, not my favorite but my "go to" kick mic for harder playing styleM88 - react a lot to placement, fun to work with!SM57 on beater and M380 on resonant - Works great, it sounds short and fat EV664 - I love this mic on beater it also takes a nice bleed from the snareML53 - An oktava ribbon placed not too close but not so far from the front skin at shell height and sligthly angled gives me a deep sounding drum with good attack (depends from one mic to the other for the same model), a very true sound.
