Long before the advent of Youtube, which enabled me to behold his conducting antics, I really, really enjoyed his music, even without having much of an idea of how visually spectacular his performances were.
The Ascension and Symphony #6 remain my personal favorites.

NerblyBear wrote:I just got the recently released piece entitled "Indeterminate Masses...", which is provided along with a ludicrous, fifteen-minute interview with John Cage wherein, notoriously, he equates Branca's music with fascism. I have lost a lot of respect for Cage after having listened to his aimless, unintelligent attempt to explain why he thinks that such is the case. I thought this guy was supposed to be some sort of genius. It's like listening to your great-grandmother at the Alzheimer's home try to put her finger on just where she last left her vacuum cleaner.
I agree that Cage's criticisms of the Branca premiere are overboard, but Branca's reaction to Cage is even more ridiculous. He admits in the liner notes of this disc that Cage's criticism actually helped him in an "any press is good press" way. Yet Branca seems bitter over the criticism, as if Cage doesn't have the right. If Cage's criticism is taken as that of an audience member, instead of as coming from on high, it's nothing to get excited about. Branca's the one who made a mountain out of a molehill.
Further, releasing a 19-minute interview with someone who has been dead for 15 years so you can argue with him in the liner notes? Branca must be a petty guy.
I like the music fine.

I saw this duo play a few years ago supporting Sonic Youth at the latter's "Goodbye 20th Century" concert in the Royal Festival Hall. They (Branca and partner) made a gorgeous, sweeping roar. When they finished, I realised how useful this all-encompassing speedway noise was, as it became evident that a bunch of drunk Sonic Youth fans' heckles became evident. Same said drunk Sonic Youth fans later berated Sonic Youth for not playing the hits on a concert advertised as experimental. Idiots.
I am very sad to miss this gig on the 12th.
