Why do all discussions on the 'ethics of filesharing' that i know of ultimately dissolve into semantics and Lars-bashing?

hey, all you crazy F*#kers out there... Lars here, we are gonna rock your asses hard on the summer sanitarium tour with the best bands out there like limp bizcut and linkin park! thanks for buying our 75$ tickets to see a bunch of crap and poser metal! look at my face im a heavy rock drummer..IM MEAN and TOUGH! ST anger baby. but please dont "share" my songs, i put a lot of "time" in this last record tring to sound like every other band out there .....hmm lets tune down our guitars ?? (idiot) like maybe system of a down ???? come on its not fair.. im only worth $80,000,000.00 i have to make a living... so just because i could buy your city doesnt mean you cant spend your hard earned money on my cd's. ... what you want to hear it first and borrow it... I'll see you in court!

maybe this will raise the bar for bands out there that think they can just release any pile of shit and someone will buy it.. actually only hardcore fans that respect a band and there music will buy the cd. its all those idiots that want the american idol songs that share all the time... because honestly i can never find the songs i want or have the time to make sure they download. bottom line it will never go away, not until a new means to record music for free is found! hey let me know ok! rock on man.

The record industry has never been "passive," as you say, and if you'd like to find out just how "passive" it is, then doll yourself up and put yourself in the shoes of the thousands of misguided souls who really believe there is no other way [to "make it big"].

If you'd care to hear the perspective of a practicing musician, i'll give you this: filesharing? i couldn't fucking care less. it doesn't impact me, because if no-one shared files, i wouldn't be making money...and if they share files, i'm not making money, so i'm sort of in the same place. it's not a win/win, win/lose, OR lose/lose situation...IT JUST DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER. people like you, who are making big to-do's over trifles, are the ones who i'd call responsible for "ending up behind the curve," because you're wasting so much time and energy over rediculous non-issues that you lose focus over what does matter, which is SUPPOSED to be the art itself. No matter the extent of the control a person has or doesn't have over his music (or other creation), he's still going to die, the control will eventually have to be relinquished, and as long as he did what it took to go to bed with an easy conscience every day that he was alive and arting his art, well then, that's all i care about.

The way musicians can give away their music for free and still makes oodles of money is to tour. Most indie bands don't make very much money from album sales but they can make a good living touring. Likewise, major label acts (with the exception of the megamillion stars like Madonna and N'Sync) aren't going to see a whole lot of cash coming their way from sales. Where the big money comes is from concerts, from marketing, from licensing. In other words, give away your music. If people like it you'll play sold out shows and maybe sell a song or two to Nike (and yeah yeah yeah, go ahead and get all angry about corporate uses of music).[/quote]

But that means musicians who want to pursue their music full-time pretty much have to resign themselves to spending a lot more time away from home and their loved ones, eating poorly (or at least, probably, unhealthily), listening to the shitty CDs their bandmates like for several months out of the year, etc. And I think you'd have to make a lot of money on the road to cover the costs of being on the road; maintaining your home while you're on the road; recording your record; and promoting it (if you update a website and no one knows it, do the MP3s make a sound?). Plus it also condems rock musicians to subjecting themselves to that much more loud noise or, worse, wearing earplugs. When do you find time to write and record if you're touring all the time? And what about the Beatles, who made some (all?) of their best records after they quit touring? Ditto Brian Wilson, and anyone else you care to come up with who fits the profile. -E
