A youtube comment on my film pointed me in the direction of this. Hits on several of the same themes as mine. The band seems a bit twee for my tastes, but the heart is there, for sure.
Re: Music Documentary Thread
32I have not yet figured out (or remembered) how to embed YouTube videos on here.
Anyway, you need to see "Desolation Center" which is about the series of concerts in the Mojave Desert back in the 80s that featured Savage Republic, Sonic Youth, Einsturzende Neubauten, Minutemen, Survival Research Laboratories & others. It's rentable on Amazon Prime video or buyable on DVD.
And somebody mentioned the Rowland S. Howard doc "Autoluminescent" above - it's also rentable on Prime.
Also recently on Prime I saw a KIlling Joke doc called "The Death & Resurrection Show" which was somewhat interesting but it was mostly about how crazy and into weird mystical stuff the band members are. I wanted to hear more about how they made their music.
And there is a recent Swans documentary which is LONG. Has some good content though. I got the deluxe blu-ray which is EVEN LONGER.

Re: Music Documentary Thread
33Ugh yes. I'm a somewhat recent convert to KJ's music but yeah much of this documentary undid a lot of that. Jaz seems like he would be insufferable to be around.Otto Parts wrote: Mon Jun 28, 2021 10:28 am Also recently on Prime I saw a KIlling Joke doc called "The Death & Resurrection Show" which was somewhat interesting but it was mostly about how crazy and into weird mystical stuff the band members are. BUT, there's an excellent scene where Geordie.. lemme back up to say that basically any guitar player I respect thinks extremely highly of his parts and overall guitar sound.. is asked about his guitar at the kitchen table and reaches over to grab his one and only semi-hollow Gibson which I think is just leaning against the fuckin' wall to comment about it. That guitar will probably end up in a museum one day yet he's not precious with it at all.
Re: Music Documentary Thread
34At one of the KJ shows at the Empty Bottle, I got to the front of the stage where Geordie was set up. I took a few photos of his guitar, which I could see from 5-10 feet away was beat to hell. I think he has a back-up old Gibson hollow body as well, but don't quote me on it. My friend's wife, who identifies as goth, walked around a corner at the venue and was face to face with Jaz. She said she yelped and got away from him as fast as she could. LOL!
Re: Music Documentary Thread
35I recall a photo where he was holding one in each hand - the main one looking a little more weathered. He spent the first 3 albums figuring his sound out but by Fire Dances he'd worked out what he wanted and he's generally stuck with it (aside from some Les Paul moments on Pandemonium).AdamN wrote: Tue Jun 29, 2021 9:32 amI think he has a back-up old Gibson hollow body as well, but don't quote me on it.
The KJ doc was ok, nothing I didn't know as a mega fan, but interesting enough. They all practice(d) magic and have quite pragmatic attitudes, so it's a decent showing of their core dichotomy - understandable that this may seem laughable to some.

36This.......is immense.

37Warner Bros. has blocked that YouTube vid in the US.
(It's Scott Walker: 30 Century Man.)
I think that's available right now on the streaming service Kanopy - several public library systems in the states offer free access to that streaming service.
Re: Music Documentary Thread
38I remember when reading Chris Connelly's memoir that whenever he mentioned KJ's visits to Chicago, he would refer to them as if they were flaky idiots. Eh, Chris, your meal ticket is a bunco artist that heavily ripped off KJ as well a FM's influential band.M.H wrote: Tue Jun 29, 2021 1:21 pmThe KJ doc was ok, nothing I didn't know as a mega fan, but interesting enough. 39It's also on Prime. I re-watched it recently (originally saw it on a Netflix DVD) and it's still good!brephophagist wrote: Tue Jun 29, 2021 6:07 pm Warner Bros. has blocked that YouTube vid in the US.

Re: Music Documentary Thread
40Yeah, I watched it within the last 6 months through a standard streaming service, must've been Prime. Loved it, highly recommended.penningtron wrote: Wed Jun 30, 2021 7:59 amIt's also on Prime.
