I saw The Misfits 12 days ago. It was a last minute thing - I'd been waffling for a while on whether or not to go, and once I finally convinced myself that I *did* want to go, I wound up bound to a previous obligation I'd forgotten about - basically I'd promised my 13 yo daughter that I'd take her to see a different band, not realizing they were on the same night.
The morning of the show comes, and the band we had tickets to take my daughter to see cancelled their show - illness in the band.
How often will I have the chance to see Alice Cooper open for The Misfits with the actual, in the flesh Glenn Danzig fronting the band, I thought? The world doesn't offer you this wild an event all that often, so I felt bound to go. I texted a friend who I see most shows with, we bought tix on stubhub and that was that.
It was a blast in every way. I wanted to see all the spectacle of Alice Cooper's live show with props and decapitations and shit, etc..and he delivered. I wanted The Misfits to be schlocky and goofy and arrogant and they were a fantastic semi train wreck - saved somewhat by a pro drummer and a slightly off stage pro rhythm guitarist that kept the thing on the rails.
Glenn even once claimed their hearts were black, then took that back and said they couldn't have black hearts since they had NO HEARTS AT ALL! Perfect.
I'm not a huge fan of either - I like them both just fine, but I'm not running out to buy any re-issues. When an OG Misfits sing comes on, I think it's great. When an OG AC song comes on, I'm happy, but man. What a fun show. Total departure from most other shit I've seen this year.
So I hope he's thinking he's glad he took the money and ran with these reformation shows. It was worth it.
