Mammals* never reached New Zealand until those bastards (humans) arrived, so the native fauna are unusually ill equipped to survive things like rats, cats, weasels, etc etc. As a result Kiwis have an ironically robust attitude to foreign animals.

You can distinguish an Australian from a New Zealander by showing them a photo of a possum. The former will find it cute, whereas the latter with fall upon the image with a heavy implement, attempting to murder the furry devil.
