We’re in Japan now, flying home today. The past few days haven’t been bad, but the first week and change was brutal—temperatures just a hair under 100, with high humidity. This meant that we hit more museums than we’d planned to, but the museums were great, so no big loss. We opted not to take a day trip to Nara and instead spent the hot part of the day exploring the wonderful (covered!) markets in Kyoto.
Southern Europe looks nightmarishly hot.

32My brother had a clipboard with some work papers on it, and the whole thing melted all over his dash. Even hardened desert folk are saying it's ridiculous, and still climbing. Currently feeling in the mid-fifties there.

One of the many side effects of climate change is that it’s going to wreak havoc on certain regional economies that depend on summer tourism. Who now is going to want to book a summer trip to Greece or Italy or Spain or Egypt or Morocco?

35An entire month of +110 every goddamn day. It's no losing your home to a flood, tornado or wildfire but it grinds you down starting with every morning being 90 already. So thankful we had a new ac, attic insulation and ceiling fans put in just two summers ago.

There have been floods before (Hurricane Irene was bad) but this seems worse. Folks are independent and resilient, though, and they're getting it done.

We've a quickie cabin getaway planned a touch north a Mount Mansfield in early Aug and haven't heard back yet from the owners. Maybe we'll make it to Stowe in addition still but Montpelier and Barre seem out of the question.

37Dunno what will happen in the future but here in Ibiza and Mallorca there are more tourists than ever. A lot of people from cold places (uk, Germany...) just LOVE this high temperatures, when I worked at the airport I saw THOUSANDS of them arrive EVERYDAY.

38We keep having fires pop up all around the Austin area. It’s brittle dry and fire crews are playing whack-a-mole with brush fires. One gets put under control, then another one pops up, then another. No rain in the forecast, and temperatures around 105 for the next couple of weeks.
Just saw the news about parts of Maui burning. Hard to believe.
