We’re in Japan now, flying home today. The past few days haven’t been bad, but the first week and change was brutal—temperatures just a hair under 100, with high humidity. This meant that we hit more museums than we’d planned to, but the museums were great, so no big loss. We opted not to take a day trip to Nara and instead spent the hot part of the day exploring the wonderful (covered!) markets in Kyoto.
Southern Europe looks nightmarishly hot.

My brother had a clipboard with some work papers on it, and the whole thing melted all over his dash. Even hardened desert folk are saying it's ridiculous, and still climbing. Currently feeling in the mid-fifties there.

Jesus.
One of the many side effects of climate change is that it’s going to wreak havoc on certain regional economies that depend on summer tourism. Who now is going to want to book a summer trip to Greece or Italy or Spain or Egypt or Morocco?

That'll be the case soon shortly, but not yet. Increasingly likely I'll have to head to Spain at the end of the month, and flights are being snapped up like nobody's business for 'a bit' of sun....

An entire month of +110 every goddamn day. It's no losing your home to a flood, tornado or wildfire but it grinds you down starting with every morning being 90 already. So thankful we had a new ac, attic insulation and ceiling fans put in just two summers ago.
The open oven door winds in the afternoon are brutal.
It's been real hard for the dogs at the shelter I volunteer at weekly.

Close to home... VT seems to be hurting. How are Vermont folks doing with all the water?
It's pretty bad. Water has receded but man, quite a lot of destruction. I live on a small river in NW Vermont which ran very high and washed out some land but nothing near the house. Larger rivers just north and south of us flooded pretty badly and riverside towns in those areas were just inundated. The grocery store about 15-20 miles north had water up to the top of the windows. Montpelier has a great downtown, lots of small businesses, restaurants, bars/clubs - looked to be flooded 4-5 feet deep in places. A favorite music club was inundated. Not sure if they had time to get the gear out - water came pretty fast in most places.
There have been floods before (Hurricane Irene was bad) but this seems worse. Folks are independent and resilient, though, and they're getting it done.
Thanks for asking! If you want to help out the folks at Bent Nails Bistro, they're here:

Friend in Montpelier said it was essentially wrecked. This is a man not at all disposed to negativity. I haven't asked him about it for a few days.
Shit that's horrible. I'm guessing NY is in a similar state...
We've a quickie cabin getaway planned a touch north a Mount Mansfield in early Aug and haven't heard back yet from the owners. Maybe we'll make it to Stowe in addition still but Montpelier and Barre seem out of the question.

Dunno what will happen in the future but here in Ibiza and Mallorca there are more tourists than ever. And the company I work with, which is big thanks in part to tourism (though we were fine during lockdown and lack of tourists), is totally overwhelmed with work.
A lot of people from cold places (uk, Germany...) just LOVE this high temperatures, when I worked at the airport I saw THOUSANDS of them arrive EVERYDAY.

We keep having fires pop up all around the Austin area. It’s brittle dry and fire crews are playing whack-a-mole with brush fires. One gets put under control, then another one pops up, then another. No rain in the forecast, and temperatures around 105 for the next couple of weeks.
Just saw the news about parts of Maui burning. Hard to believe.
I guess this is summertime now.
