34 is regular scale

So on the cheap end I'm looking at The Talman TMB30, a super-cheap Mitchell MB100, and I'm kinda into the Hofner Shorty. But I'm afraid that if I go cheap I won't like the feel of the cheapness and that will taint my impression of short-scales. On the higher end, the Fender Player Mustang PJ is pretty appealing, but I don't know if it's gonna be 3 times better than the Talman.

The cheap stuff is legit right now. The TMB30 looks cool and I always liked the 90s Talman guitars, but I haven't played the revamped series. I think we already have a couple people here saying they had a good experience with the Squier.

If you don't have a chance to play it before you commit I'd definitely go cheap.

of those, the only one I have personal experience with his the Mustang bass and can say those are great. Some of the lower-cost Fenders suffer from poor fret dressing on the edges but that can be dealt with by any setup tech.

Danelectro longhorn bass is also a surprisingly good-sounding short scale bass, but understand the looks and style are not for everyone. Robert in Nonagon is probably best example I know of someone ripping the fuck out of one.

Eastwood's quality has historically been all over the map but I *think* lately they've been good? I would take a shorty Ellis-tang or mosrite bass anyday

If I'm not mistaken, that Goofball Lobster-Claw YouTube bass-review dude was very into the shorty Guild Starfire bass a while back, which is both very affordable and (in my opinion) pretty good-looking, too.

Is $722 a good price for a brand new Fender "Player" (dumb name) Mustang? I got an offer.

our bass player loves both his Fender Mustang and the Squire Mustang he bought for touring.

Also, you could do a lot worse than a Squier Bronco- throw in the SD 54 bass pickup and you have something pretty amazing for almost zero dollars.

ehhhhh....that's a bit too rich for my blood PERSONALLY, but I'm a notorious grinder/low-baller/cheapskate and will only go after a really good deal (especially now that I'm way over-stocked on gear). The one I was most familiar with is probably 10 years old by now and not sure exactly which "series" or whatever it was part of & honestly I've always both hated & been challenged by understanding how Fender calls one thing a strat but then there's like 100000x varieties and it's not labeled but that's a different rant.

If I were to buy a short-scale bass new, I'd probably get the Squier for about 3/5ths that price, but doesn't have the 2 pickups. Personally I have only dorked around on those in the store (& also I'm not very good) but it has seemed like huge bang-for-the-buck. Traditionally the main cost-savings are hardware-related so plan to upgrade down the road like CJury suggested. EDIT, actually if I were to buy another short scale bass, I'd certainly get a CJury alumi-build...

Don’t know basses, but if you can try it in person to test the particular unit, the higher end Squier guitars can be fucking great. Often the not so higher end squiers are great though might require a little tinkering.

They are $850 everywhere. If it is in fact new with warranty, that's an excellent price. If it is used but "like new" $650 should be your target.

The Squier Classic Vibe Mustang Bass is pretty awesome. Especially for the money.

Short scale basses are pretty fun. They often have a thumpier low end but the trade off is that the notes aren't as defined below A. Especially vague sounding through a DI over a loud PA with a sub. The Mustang isn't as bad at that as some others like Epiphone. I wish Fender would make a Mustang bass with the more common vintage nut width instead of the tiny Jazz Bass width.
