You can hate on Foreigner and Journey and REO Speedwagon and all the other bullshit parading around as "pop rock," but Boston is a motherfucker of an album made under corporate pressure from a group of DIY power pop junkies who changed radio (for better and for worse)
Parallels to The Cars seem apt! Mad respect to that album and that one only, but NOT CRAP

I don't like Boston, but you can't deny the genius of Tom Scholz. Most people would have given up on that endeavor. Also, his bass playing was killer.

I did enjoy reading about the making of that album in some guitar magazine when I was a teen. Definitely some inspired hobbyist stuff taken to the extreme.

I have a younger friend whose favorite bands are oddly Boston and Rush. He used to be on Boston's forum, and posted that he was trying to find one of the later albums on vinyl. Some anonymous person DM'ed him, and said he would send him a copy if he didn't mention where it came from. The package was from Tom Scholz.

The kind of story that makes me want to like Boston!

Yeah, cool story but it sounds like bullshit to me. Nobody is looking for later Boston albums on vinyl.
edit: I take it back, it must be
this guy.

Feel like we need to move on to Billy Squier at this point

No, this was legit. I don't know why he wanted Walk On on vinyl, either, but he got a copy. Since it came out in 1994, it probably didn't get issued on wax in the US. Again, I'm not a fan.

Jammed this again today and I'm going to boldly claim a crap vote. This thing lurks somewhere between Cheap Trick and Devo (both of whom I dislike but respect) but without the sense of involvement and joy. Too much distance, posing, etc. Just... missing that something; it ain't weird, but it's difficult... a frustrating fuck kinda deal.
For the record: Boston debut is NC, I meant that comparison in a positive way.

Billy Squier was the Led Zeppelin of the Rt 1 Auto Mile.
