I dunno, maybe it's the double-major in Political Science and History, with an emphasis in Latin American studies, but this shit seems absolutely transparent to me.
The Trump admin is using violence to try and provoke a response from Venezuela that will justify sending the Marines. Nothing more complicated than that. Once they can establish a flimsy pretext for invasion, the US can install whatever Chicago School/School of the Americas neoliberal tool into the Prime Minister's office, and Chevron, Exxon, and BP can roll in and make a tiny handful of American failsons massively more wealthy.
If you need more context than that, I highly recommend the Blowback podcast's season on Cuba.
This playbook goes all the way back to Guatemala and the United Fruit Company. They keep doing it because it works.
