I dunno, maybe it's the double-major in Political Science and History, with an emphasis in Latin American studies, but this shit seems absolutely transparent to me.

The Trump admin is using violence to try and provoke a response from Venezuela that will justify sending the Marines. Nothing more complicated than that. Once they can establish a flimsy pretext for invasion, the US can install whatever Chicago School/School of the Americas neoliberal tool into the Prime Minister's office, and Chevron, Exxon, and BP can roll in and make a tiny handful of American failsons massively more wealthy.

If you need more context than that, I highly recommend the Blowback podcast's season on Cuba.

This playbook goes all the way back to Guatemala and the United Fruit Company. They keep doing it because it works.

Care to explain to us dumb USAers, in detail, how the two (blown up boat and oil) are connected?

Give me 10 minutes though, I need to make some popcorn.

Connect the dots for me. I see what the links are saying, but they aren't really saying anything substantive.
The gist is as always, oil (resources) and a regime change to a favorable candidate. Venezuela has the biggest oil reserves in the world.

Not to minimize how fucked up this is but I feel like it could have just been a part of the Politics thread.

No, one "political" thread is not enough in this day and age!

I agree, and I think that's what I was getting at with the Shane clip. It's about the oil and provoking a response as a pretext into invading and installing a friendly tool so that we can benefit instead of China.

Like I said... if this isn't the outcome Venezuela wants, then they better get themselves into a nuclear mutual-defense pact, and quick, before the US has a chance to react to any negotiations, because I guarantee the provocations and attacks on their civilian population will escalate until they have no realistic choice but to respond. It's pretty much the only way to guarantee your own sovereignty unless you have your own nukes. But such a pact may be a hard sell to their most likely partner, China.

The US is handing out strategic alliances to other countries faster than China can take the baton.

I'm not a fan of either prong of the neoliberal/neoconservative pitchfork, but at least that throng of shitheads had a plan.

This is just a drunk careening around a dark room taking wild punches in the air. Eventually, the townfolk are going to revolt against The Bad Guy.

I wonder if this would move Venezuela into the BRICS. They appealed to join, but were blocked by Brazil. I don't know the details, but I agree that we're just creating a huge enemies list and the BRICS is going to have our lunch in the near future.
