That's not entirely true. Protestant ministers, at least, are self-employed and are still liable for income tax. I think most churches are property-tax exempt, though, and the church itself may not have to pay income tax. I'm not keen on all the legalities, but i have a friend who's minister dad got busted for tax evasion, so there you go.
