tmidgett,
Do the meat eaters have any recordings available in the U.S.? Because your description of them has got me interested.
Glad someone gave UFO or Die a positive response. I think it was Steve who mentioned them and Zeni Geva as two of his favorite bands in the early 90's from some old zine I read.

My band did a short tour with My Way My Love, whose most recent record is out on File 13. GREAT live show.
I've also heard a lot of good things about DMBQ.
We're playing with some other Japanese band soon called Green Milk From The Planet Orange, that's supposedly pretty good.

I like these guys a good bit. Even did a CRAP/NOT CRAP on them.

Even though I have never actually heard their music, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for The Stalin. A Japanese hardcore band called The Stalin! Their photographs in Maximum Rock-n-Roll never failed to mystify and delight me.
I nominate The Stalin for greatest band name ever!

Cosmic Kurushi Monsters is a good compliation of Japanese mentalism that was out about five or six years ago. Very noisy and odd with some very cool cover art.

I was amused to find out recently that Stalin literally means 'Man of Steel' in Russian. Talk about holding yourself in high regard.

'Ex-Girl' are a pretty interesting band. 3 chicks, alot of squealing and the belief to have come from planet Kero Kero.
'Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her' are one of my favourites. Good old straight forward rocking.
'Hanadensha' for some seriously sludgy psyche rock workouts.
'Rovo' is Seichi Yamamoto's current band (aka yamamotor form boredoms). Imago is a fantastic record. Yoshimi also has 'OOIOO' with 4 albums under their belt.
Has no one metioned 'Cornelius' yet?! Varies wildly from one album to the next but usually very very good. His 2nd album "69/96" i would highly recommend to anyone into metal and/or pop if that makes any sense.
'Yellow Magic Orchestra' = the Japanese Kraftwerk
'Psychobaba' have some nice records. Light psyche i suppose.
'Hideki Kaji' is a Swedish pop obsessed songwriter worth a listen.
'Citrus' are a VERY unusual band well worth checking out.
'Hi-Posi' are another Devo wannabe band a la Polysics.
'Judy and Mary' although now split up have a couple of great tunes.
Photographer 'Hiromix' did a half decent record with 'Dots and Borders' at the helm.
There's the contenders for "Japanese Bjork" as well if that takes your fancy. Chara, Takako Minekawa, Kahimi Karie and Aco.
For the more gentle folky, yet still a touch psychadelic i can heartily recommend 2 of my favourite bands : 'Maher Shalal Hash Baz' and 'Nagisa Ni Te'. A good way in could be 'Blues Du Jour'/'Maher on Water' and 'The Same As a Flower' respectively. And anything by 'Tenniscoats' is equally wonderful.
There's loads of daft pop bands that have a few one off classics, like Puffy Amiyumi have a tune called JET ROCK i think, that sounds a bit like a girly Cheap Trick. (they also did the theme for the TEEN TITANS cartoon)
Then for the ultra geeky there is 'The Black Mages'. A rock band that only play arrangements of Final Fantasy game music. Yikes!
Most others have already been mentioned, including the greatest band of all time. And i don't care how many times i say it in all of my posts and avatar etc.
BOREDOMS BOREDOMS BOREDOMS BOREDOMS BOREDOMS!
