the Coughs from Chicago, saw them this past wknd and they whipped up an excellent bit of Contortions-style fury

Ari Ari from Muncie, IN are great, w/ an impressive frontwoman who transcends the "screamy-singer" role w/ an brilliant near old-school hardcore style. The band itself also busts the "screamo" mold, thanks to solid playing on all fronts (full-disclosure, they are good friends and are currently on tour the whole summer, go see them)

Falcon Crest from the Deuce Cities, Mn, also friends, w/ a punishing, noisy take on the Hot Snakes/Wipers model, the rhythm section is brutal

Conformists from St. Louis, buzzsaw from this board's band, great, fragmented noise/rock, full of stop/starts plus derranged frontman, great

Blind Shake also from the Mn, awesome, tense, rock a la early Vaz or the much loved Freedom Fighters, great live band, they mean it man, I really love this band

you should be able to find stuff on all these bands w/ minimal digging, get in on the ground floor

Thanks! I've got Fright Makes Right and enjoy it a great deal. I wish I would've known about this past weekend's performance.

Is anyone familiar with Loraxx? They're playing tonight at the Double Door.

Tar Baby wrote:Yes, please, and more of it! I was looking for new bands exploring that aesthetic. I didn't want to roll off a list of bands which is why I opted to post labels instead: AmRep, Touch & Go, Skin Graft, etc., etc.

I've actually been very remiss in seeking out new noise-rock bands in the last few years, so this thread is actually helping me out as much as it is you! However, here are a few that haven't been mentioned yet:

-Replicator: i think Ben Adrian from this band is on this board--excellent mathy abrasion with samples. They get compared to Shellac a lot, but they've developed their own identity with ease.

-Lost Sounds: more proto-punk/new wave, but their synths are blurpy noisy goodness. If you're into early Devo, Chrome, and modern garage-punk they're a great hybrid. They recently broke up though (boo!).

-Infomatik: Awesome band just starting out, i think, in the Seattle area. Fuzzed-out bass and noisy synths once again. Dunno if they have any recordings out yet. My band played with them last month in Seattle and they were all "um, soon!"

-Has anyone mentioned A Frames yet? They're an abrasive proto-punk-sounding outfit out of Seattle and they rule. They're big on establishing one bass/drums riff and putting scrape-y angular guitar over it. Got to play with them in Seattle too. Swoon.

-Finally, yes, i'm a huge whore: my band, IfIHadAHiFi, is all about the noise-dance-disco-skronk (but not in a lame Rapture kinda way). We get compared to Brainiac and The Fall and such, probably because we've been shamelessly ripping them off for years!

I actually purchased Serenade in Red a couple of months ago. Dire music. Beautiful vinyl.

Black Forest is in heavy rotation chez Tar Baby. One of the best releases this year. I loved it so much I bought another copy to give away.

OK, to clarify. What you describe as "noise-rock" I would consider rock that enjoys dissonance. I am cool with that. I like that.

I am talking about what you call "noise'. I enjoy that too but as we seem to agree, there is no ability to discern amongst the folks to show up to the gigs. The fact that Wolf Eyes is among the better-known acts reveals the sad state of that realm.

Fuck 'em!

DrAwkward wrote:Or wait, are you talking about noise? Because you may have a point with pure noise artists. I've seen some brilliant noise artists and a whole crap-ton of boring ones, and very often i've seen noise audiences have a hard time separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff.
