I can't say they are crap but am also not that impressed. It sounds like cute captain beefheart to me.

Saw them for a second time on Saturday and they were much better. In fact I was pretty into it except for the fact that it was totally packed and the club only let you smoke way in the back so I didn't get to see them all close. In fact, I watched them on a little TV monitor thing.

And Angry_Dragon, I saw them at the NY Knitting Factory after Apple 'O came out and thought they were GREAT live. Really really great. Glad you liked 'em better round 2.

You can figure out the mystery band with some efficient googling. I say let the "mystery" stay. Use the clues in the discussions.

I've been rocking their songs inside my head for a month straight now. They rock inside my head.


I finally got a chance to see them a few months back and the racket that drummer created with a kick, snare, high hat and cymbal was astounding. The twin guitar runs a half step off from eachother send chills up my spine. Still not crazy about the timbre of her voice, but the melodies and arrangements still reign.

all i've heard is milkman, someone gave me a cd-r... it was definitely good. a few annoying songs notwithstanding, a pretty damn solid disc with some nice variation.

as for the vocalist, i've never seen them live, but on disc i thought she sounded good except on this one song where she really bugged me.

as for asian vocalist thing... my girlfriend gets really irate about the fetishization of asian women by white guys, and while i think she sometimes goes a little far, she certainly has a point, and i've noticed bands with asian women get press that reads like "did we mention they've got an ASIAN GIRL? (slobber, drool)". seems like some people can't focus on the music when they're thinking about dirty talk in broken english, a la "full metal jacket" or 2 live crew.

god when OOIOO came to town recently there was all this press like "get this... 4 ASIAN WOMEN in NEON BODY PAINT. and they play music!"

i saw my friend's band kayo dot a little while ago, opening for dillinger escape plan. a throng of hardcore jock meatheads started chanting "i want to fuck that chinese bitch" at the violin players (asian women), during a ballad too quiet to drown them out. i mean, that's just fucking wrong.

i don't know how deerhoof fares in this regard but surely this phenomenon affects them. hey, it might boost their sales... but for questionable reasons.

I did love the insane drummery, I seriously thought I was going to see him knock his drums off the stands.
The guitar tone was great, but as previously mentioned, the arrangements of the songs are ultra weird... still not enough to force me away.

The vocals... damn.
basically represented a slow and painful death for me.
