I’m not about to make any more major gear purchases this year, but they look so cool that I just want to hear from somebody that they suck.

352The Gretsch baritone.
G5260 I think. Looks so cool. I need a new instrument that functions differently to shake myself out of my comfort zone. I've seen these go used for like $450. Also I have 4 electric guitars already.

When it will turn Coldplay into something I actually will listen to just by being great equipment that looks cool?
Let's talk.
Until then, it's just more high end gear.

Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
355The electromatic series quality is trash - most pickups sound like mush. That said, the basses I've heard be fine so maybe the baritone is okay. I don't know.losthighway wrote: Mon Jul 10, 2023 7:42 pm The Gretsch baritone.

Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
358I had one a Gretsch bari a while back. The pickups were indeed devoid of any discernible character - some GFS P90's made a world of difference. I currently have (Christ knows why) two Gretschs, one of which, a Streamliner with "Broadtrons", also desperately needed new pickups, and was (again) improved by the cheapest Filtertron style p/ups I could find. The Electromatic G5230T is still stock and I'm happy with the stock (alleged) Filtertrons. I'm much more a single coil person, I think, and they have some bite and character.TylerDeadPine wrote: Tue Jul 11, 2023 12:16 amThe electromatic series quality is trash - most pickups sound like mush. TL;DR, cheap Gretsch pickups are a lottery, with the odds stacked in the house's favour.
Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
359I've never shied away from changing out mediocre pickups on an otherwise cool guitar. Are bari pickups unique spacing/format?
Re: Gear talk: TALK ME OUT OF IT
360Regarding Gretsch: They sure look nice but IME the build quality sucks. I got a streamliner jr, it worked for a half hour then died completely. Initially I thought "oh no problem, just a simple wiring fix" but then I realized the reality of working on electronics on a semi-hollowbody, and UGH. So I took it back to GC, traded it for another one, which I just grabbed off the wall and didn't really play. That was dumb, it had a shitty setup and really sharp fret ends. Wouldn't stay in tune for shit. The electronics at least worked, but they were real flakey, the volume/tone pots were worthless. It ended up not getting played and I traded it in at my local shop.
The neck was nice though, and it did look good. All that to say: don't buy one online, play one at the store, be prepared to do some work on it.
Anyway,

Seriously. I've 13 in the studio and there's more in the house. *backs quietly out of thread*
