It makes sense if the point of the asylum claim is oppression under Assad. Right or wrong refugee status isn’t based on “my country is in the shit”, it’s based on fleeing persecution and war.
But Syria is about to descend into years of factionalism and conflict so Europe will need to reopen applications in six months or so. Unless for the first time in history the dudes with guns just pack up and let civil society take over.
