lol we keep piling on suggested features and it's going to end up costing double the aforementioned Chandler Abbey Road stuff and no one will be able to afford one
starting to wonder if separate bare bones model + a deluxe bells-and-whistles model might be the way to go
or maybe it'd be BALLS-and-whistles see what I did there thx try the veal
Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
362Nah I wanted to explore more budget options and it sounds like the 1:7 spec on the original isnt wildly necessary and 1:10 options work great. Went with a 1:10 hammond option, so we shall see.

Lol just kidding. The output vol could be cool and easy to add.
Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
363lol could call it the Balls Homer
"Powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a Nerf ball."
This is not at all far off from existing marketing terminology for preamps (or any audio tech really) not to mention this additional gem from the simpsons wiki: the engine sound causes people to think "the world's coming to an end."

Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
365A meter, or even a little overload light is useful to get a quick visual confirmation that you stuff is connected ok. If you have multiple mics, maybe with a snake, and a patchbay, stuff can get complex enough that a little red led flash when you tap a mic can be helpful, just to know you’re passing signal. I have a dual UA 610 pre and it was quite expensive and it really would have been nice if they put some metering on it.
Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
366I'm really interested in this. I have never made the jump to a "nice" pre, and this seems like it could be the thing. Stripped down would be very appealing to me. Master volume and instrument input as the most attractive features. Phantom power and polarity switch would be good, too, but I feel like I wouldn't *need* anything beyond that.

Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
368Oh, for sure. I was more thinking phantom power and polarity were practical and instrument input and master vol were exciting "features" without going hog wild on features. Didn't state that very clearly.

Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
369yeah some of the balls-and-whistles suggestions are actually super exciting and could turn this into a viable "standard production" model because of some of the quirks that don't exist on other mic pres on the market, the Kniferide suggestion specfically but also being able to slam the tubes I think is super useful for getting creative/interesting sounds right out of the gate.
Re: Balls Effects / Balls Amplification
370I'm here for the tube slam.
