Hey, Tim.

What do you think of spats? Do you think that they could be worn today by men or women in a way that was compelling?

Thx.

Beth, I agree with Matthew:

I say no to men and a maybe to women. You see the right woman can make anything compelling.

It's real, real hard for me to imagine a guy wearing spats and not looking like a dipshit.

It's pretty hard for me to imagine them on a woman who is not tap-dancing, period. But you know, the right pair of legs, and all of a sudden, you know, I kinda always liked spats.
Question- where do you buy most of your shoes? I usually go to Alamo shoes in Andersonville, but the sales guys give off a really strange Al Bundy vibe that makes me a little uncomfortable sometimes.

Yeah, it's weird in there! Obviously, they work on commission. My wife will not go in there any more due to the pressure.

I got some Clarks there once many years ago. Oh, yeah, and these Borns. They are red, only red shoes I own.

Bill Murray wore the same model on David Letterman once. I know b/c the guy told me that twice. I had already decided to buy them. Then he told the next guy who picked them up the same thing.

I buy shoes all over the place, I guess.

I have had so many pairs of shoes, I generally buy them online since I know my size in every brand known to man.

Zappos.com is great if you know what you want. shoes.com. Bluefly.com. Nordstrom Rack can be pretty good. You can get surprising deals during sales at Saks and Neiman Marcus and shit like that.

you seem to be a man about town - the monocle, the shoe fetish, the fervent razor following (i may become a follower soon).

Oh, yes. I am nothing if not a man about town.

what do you do about cleaning shirts to address/avoid the inevitable under arm stains and/or smells that don't seem to go away? help me stop living up to my initials. is it the mitchum deodorant? what is it?

All my long-sleeved, button-up shirts go to the cleaners. You like to iron? I don't. Something about asking my wife to iron, that's too much.

Other shirts, I've never had this problem chronically, but I know what you mean. If you are using antiperspirant (as opposed to just deodorant) that could well be it.

I hate antiperspirant. It muds shut your sweat glands, is what it does. Fucked...up.

Deodorant, well, that's a product of evolution.

You might change deod, regardless. You don't smell bad, but if you have this stain problem, why not. I use Tom's of Maine, plainest shit they have. I get it in bulk at Trader Joe's.
i only have 9 pairs of shoes

I wager that, among dudes, that's a fair number of pairs.

Brian has Keen shoes and swears by them. I can't bring myself to look at Keens, much less try them on, much less buy them and wear them around. But I'm sure they must be comfortable, b/c Brian and Bob Weston are men who know the meaning of and value comfort.

If you were forced to choose, would you consider yourself more of a dandy or fop?

Very good question. There is a difference.

Dandy, for sure. If forced to choose one.

Also, if forum members Brian and R.F.F. got into a no holds barred street fight, who do you think would win?

Honestly, and I would answer this straight-up if I could, I do not know. I don't even have a lean.

I know Brian is too even-tempered not to have an immense reservoir of inner rage, and R.F.F. is too comfortable in his own skin not be one of those big guys who is about five times stronger than you think he is.

If forced to pick, I would pick R.F.F. just on size. But I would not bet a dime on it.

I would so horrified if this actually happened. It's hard for me to think of two guys I would less like to see pound on each other.

Four.

Sneaks, boots, dress, sandals.

I think that's par for the course if you're under thirty.

I should concede to an internet forum on every single unimportant decision that I make in my life. If I don't do that, I "FAIL".

Yes, that is correct.

Have to get standards from some place.

As I have said previously, I have a pair of incredibly skanky, very old Birkenstocks. I wear them in the yard and at the beach on occasion.

They're fucking nasty. So old and dirty and gross.

But I have about a million pairs of shoes, so the mandals are thereby diluted.

Hey, if they were good enough for JESUS and GANDHI and dudes like that, who are we to judge?

What's the difference between The Kadane Brothers and
The New Year?

Three or four VOMPUMOVI.

Vasque.

They're nice boots. The more water boots go through, the more malleable they get. I like a good stiff boot.

Before I post my next query, please allow me to slightly rectify the shaving issue:

In regard to shaving with or against the grain, you do both; lather, shave-with-the-grain, rinse, lather, shave-against-the-grain, rinse, wash face with a gentle non-comedogenic cleanser, pat dry face, apply toner/astringent, moisturize, done. The Queer Eye dudes changed their tune after a couple of seasons.

Lastly, I'd be interested to read what your picks are for one album that's indicative of each season.

Thanks!

Tim,

I was at mother's day brunch today and had to deal with the inevitable spill. This time it was not from the young nieces and nephews but due to an uneven table. So the question is how do you deal with the inevitable spill?

When using a straight razor, it is good to do a three pass shave: first with the grain, second at 90 degrees to the grain, thirdly against...this gets your face so smooth it is quite disconcerting...I have done it a couple of times a a double edge saftey razor and it works fine, but you have to be really aware of how keen the blade is and change it when it gets dull...

Oh, great. That is great to know. Thank you for your input.

I will try this next time I shave.

You have to have a pretty sharp blade to do this, I imagine.

Just off the cuff and indicative, probably, of my recent listening to some degree:

Spring

Kinks, Percy soundtrack--endless rotation right now, as with every spring.

Summer

Sly and the Family Stone, Greatest Hits--I don't think this needs any explanation.

Fall

Billie Holiday, Broadcast Performances Vol. 3, on ESP--One of four vols, the only one of them that I have. I just sold a BH box set, because whenever I want to hear her, this is all I want to play.

Winter

Joy Division, Closer--Kind of the inverse of my summer record.

I was at mother's day brunch today and had to deal with the inevitable spill. This time it was not from the young nieces and nephews but due to an uneven table. So the question is how do you deal with the inevitable spill?

If it hasn't happened yet, you can stop it.

I would put folded napkins under the table leg if it had a wobble.

If it didn't wobble and was just uneven, I would have moved the drinks as close to the table center as possible. If they did spill, they would have farther to go before hitting my lap.

Oh, hai tmidgett!

Thanks to inspiration from an earlier post of yours, I have upgraded my worn copy of Cheap Trick's Samurai Rock Band (on eBay, 24 bucks, cheap). While listening to this lp and the Four Men W/ Beards reissue of Scott 3, I have come to a conclusion; I am tired of my Dennon DL-160 cartridge.

I have two Grado Platinum cartridges I could re-tip to Sonata specs ($330 each)...

Do you still like the Grado Sonata?

Respectfully Submitted,

Redline

What are some good alternatives to cargo shorts?

Ha. I'm curious, as well. So utilitarian, these cargo shorts. I should love them but they are too ugly and awkward. I just wear a jacket with pockets if it isn't too warm. I'll just leave my junk in the car or house if it is too hot and I don't need the items that would go in the cargo shorts/jacket.

Cigarettes are the only real problem.
