Only if they are invisible and stretch to scary-sparky distance.

The ticket below just came in. Anything bold or italic was added by me.

Client Name: H----, C----
Location: 38S Phone: +1 212 555 1111
Office: New York Office Container: A-------
Category: Network Services
Sub Category: Internet Access
Priority Level: 4
Ticket Description: webcam

User is trying to access a webcam on
http://www.thepawstop.com/funstuff-webcams.aspx but is unable to - cam won't
load. Username for website is:
c-----@c----.com. PW for website is in BB field above. User asked me to
explain that the dog is little and she is concerned for it's well-being.

She says she won't abuse access to webcam.

I tested the site using our proxy settings in IE and also in Java plug-in.
Site will not work inside of our firewall. I tried on a DSL machine and
it works fine. Please check to see if the site can be unblocked from our
firewall.
J----- C---- [Tier II support(7/23/2007 3:27:49 PM)

I will have to run this past M-----. [Director of Global IT]
J--- D------ [Director of Networking](7/24/2007 12:33:32 PM)

user called for update. tolder her that those that can make the call on this
request and can approve it is on vacation. She wanted the persons name
that will be making this call so that she could e-mail them directly. I
avoided this at the moment. J--- said that M----- is on vacation presently
and he is waiting for a reply.
W---- W------- [Tier I support] (8/7/2007 4:31:06 PM)

User was asking for an update. I informed J----- that we have an approval
process and ultimately the IT Committee [Global, 25 members representing the highest levels of every department of a 3200 employee company], headed by D-- S------- [dude has probably been in the New York Times a dozen occassions over the last six months for, y'know, critical shit], and
would need to make a decision. I also mentioned that opening up our
firewall could potentially weaken our security systems. We will be in
touch next week.
C------ C----- [Help Desk manager] (8/8/2007 11:35:42 AM)

B---, we don't block webcams, per se. Can you test this and see if it works on
a DSL line? It may be that the webcams just don't work. Let me know
what you find out. Thanks.
J--- D------ (8/16/2007 9:59:06 AM)

The webcams don't work from the minilan, which is wide open. The PC has IE
7 and is wide open. The images say "downloading" then revert to the
red x in the upper left corner. The PC was not prompted for any type of
active x or whatever. But it almost looks like that some software module
is needed in IE.

It's not the request, really. People ask for stupid shit all the time. We've had people try and get us to troubleshoot their machines so they can play Unreal Tournament.

The difference between this ticket and those tickets is the process. This ticket went to the highest levels of the company. Dudes that are moving and shaking, shaping lives with their decision making, who's who type motherfuckers - they're debating doggie day care web cams at meetings where people have flown in from seven different time zones.

I guess a little bit of the insanity is the request. If the doggie day care is slaughtering your pet in a satanic ritual on camera, what the fuck are you going to do? Reach through the computer and beat the shit out of the priest?

That's where the "fuck this" came from. I mean, it's been open since July. July! I guess the person who wants to look at the doggies is Someone Important, or Someone Who Is Very Vocal.

Shit like this used to happen all the time at Huge Internet Media Company, and it was all I could do to sit there and not

a) laugh hysterically, then cry uncontrollably
b) blind my supervisor with a pencil
c) blind myself with a pencil
d) stab myself in the jugular with a pencil

Eventually I got rid of all the pencils within arm's reach and recused myself to being in on the conference call instead of being in the room with these people, because at my desk, nobody could see me staring at my lava lamp and IM'ing my co-workers about HOW FUCKING RIDICULOUS it was.

Whatever happened to "because I said so" IT guys?
