They just happen to have a great songwriter at the helm, such that the songs largely—if not necessarily entirely—transcend the gimmick.
This was brought up in the original forum, and I think the consensus was that it didn't matter that CCR weren't from the south. Even among southerners.

The songwriting has something to do with it, yes, as well as the distinct quality of the vocals and the playing, the music achieving a kind of "classic" quality by now, but also, in so far as I know, there wasn't something egregious about it.

The resemblance between “Abracadabra” and “Ramble Tamble” is uncanny.
Wow, really?! I hear ZERO in common, and I just re-listened despite being very familiar with each.
He's joking.

I was totally taken aback by the fact that Fogerty wrote Proud Mary. I was sure that was an Ike Turner job, or something otherwise genuine. Top Marks. The band sounded boss and Fogerty is a great singer, let's not play. That's a lot of fucking awesome rock singles. The B-Sides and album filler is pretty unremarkable.

Yeah, ha. Was, like, 90% sure that was a joke at first glance, but did consult YouTube yesterday just to be sure.

CCR is actually good, especially for one of those bands that kind of stopped being music to listen to after a while. They took on a more linguistic quality, where if you hear certain songs of theirs in a movie or show and there’s also a helicopter or a long shot of forest, it is going to be about the Vietnam War.

John Fogerty seems like a bit of an asshole I guess.

CCR is great for all the reasons mentioned above. They're elemental. It's like pizza (or AC/DC or Hank Williams). You can hate it (it doesn't need to be sacred) but there's something to it that is viscerally their own and it works for a lot of people.

Isn't Steve Miller Band like a lazier Steely Dan? Like it's all about being smooth guitar oriented rock, but without the perfectionism.
