this band is pure shit man. sorry.

why are you sorry? if you have the older stuff when they were a straight edge band and fred hammer was singing, then yeah. if you have the newer stuff, then you have one of the better thrash bands around.

There is a pretty good doc airing on VH-1 right now (and will doubtless be repeated ad nauseam) called METAL: A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY.

20 minutes in, it's actually quite interesting. So far, the filmmaker's spoken to Lemmy, Bruce Dickinson, Tony Iommi, guys from Voivod, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Korn, Alice Cooper, and a few others.

It's basically this guy (Sam Dunn) exploring metal as a subculture - one that he's been involved in since he was 12. It's smart, and well shot. Check it out.

CAVEAT: He is Canadian, and the doc has some Canuck leanings.

Anybody mention Napalm Death. Also Bathory is pretty good Pre- Celtic Frost. Celtic F is good too.

Don't like Burzum much. Thought Mayhem was the better band.

if you are interested in the extremes of black metal like dark throne and buzum etc.
check out these bands if you havent before for "brutalness".
all completly different but all the most extreme at what they do.

1. Beherit- some of the craziest recordings you will ever hear, really.
especially the first album, crazy finnish style black metal.

2. Nattefrost- his two solo album are amazing, especially the first and he seems to be genuinely nuts, (he wore a bullet belt with bannanas strapped to it onstage).
the new norwegian black metal.

3. Sadistik Execution- "we are death fuck" you is a classic.
these guys were an influence on the true mayhem so you know they kill.
Australian lunatics, probably the most extreme band this side of gg.

Beherit and early Sad Ex are essential!

My favorite Australian metal band of late is VOMITOR.

I've been on a bit of a metal kick myself lately. Every once in a while the urge has to be satisfied I guess...plus it's an excellent way to get people to keep the hell out of your room if you live with roommates.

I happen to love Burzum, so anything before Varg went to jail is recommended.
Also Clandestine Blaze are quite good.
Gorgoroth's last album is quite good, as well as Welowie by Gontyna Kry.
As far as black metal from the US goes, a friend of mine played me a band called Wolves in the Throne Room who were pretty good, although a bit too epic for me in some parts.

As far as metal that's not black metal that I've been enjoying this month:
Eyehategod, especially either the albums Take as Needed for Pain or Dopesick.
Khanate, but only the self titled album.
Soilent Green
Acid Bath
Disembowelment
Earth
Necrophagist
Suffocation, especially Effigy of the Forgotten
Bloodthorn
Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless

and lastly I second the recommendation for the Harvey Milk Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men. And Neurosis, cause you can never listen to too much Neurosis when in the mood to really listen to metal.

Uh, I guess that's all the immediately popped into mind.

Lastly, I recommend the website http://www.metal-archives.com/ for all your metal research needs.

I cant believe no one has mentioned Voi Vod.
the holy trinity of KILLING TECHNOLOGY, DIMENSION HATROSS and NOTHINGFACE. Still far ahead of almost everyone all of these years later.

current stuff might be some Mastadon, Enslaved, some Opeth, the band Katatonia (more goth like in the best way possible i.e. listenable).
Old faves still are the first Trouble album and some Slayer. The brand new Slayer record is pretty damn good.

The new Melvins album that will soon come out is almost perfect, too. More straight forward catchy heavy and (dare I say it?) metal then they have been in years. Impressive.

I don't know very much about metal at all, but I do like what I've heard from Napalm Death, which is mostly the grindcore stuff from the early period of the band, with Lee Dorrian and Mick Harris. It's funny, brutal, insanely cacaphonous, and underneath the racket are some really good political lyrics. They're great.

I also really love the early Swans albums (specifically "Filth," "Cop," and the "Young God" EP), and though I know they're not metal, they were pretty much the blueprint for Godflesh (especially for the first two Godflesh albums) and a lot of bands like them. Are Godflesh metal, per se, or industrial?

if your going to listen to some napalm death you cannot go past the peel sessions recordings, these are insane.
easily the best stuff they ever did.

i would almost go so far as to say THE best grindcore release ever.
i dont know what would be better, but you dont want to just give out first prize without lots of consideration and deliberation.

and i have to agree about the new melvins album that will soon come out, it is a return to form.
i love when the melvins actually play stuff on a record.
actually i like it when they dont too.
