The Ampeg scroll bass was made to play flat wound strings. There is a guy named Bruce Johnson whose workshop is 50 feet behind my studio back door. His scroll bass copy is actually way better then the OG. They are some of the deepest sounding basses I have ever played/recorded. They are wonderful yet really expensive. The waiting list is like a year plus. But well worth the wait.

Check these fuckers out if you are looking for unusually massive low end.

Maybe I am way off here but the origionals had such a long neck my firend Lisa said she had to use upright strings and cut them down. I think they made special strings origionaly.

As well the origionals had a pickup in the bridge which I heard descibed something like a condencer mike. Are any of these copies using the origional pick up design?

I am glad Rockers 654 checked out yhe Natham West EQ I still am very happy with it and find that even in rented rehersal rooms I can get a good tone out of the amp.

Cause I like the Yamaha EQ so much I also picked up a close out Magic Stomp, online I was able to find the cd download with the bass presets and I use it as well. On guitar I realy could not be happier with the sound of the echo and reverbs. The fact that you can program it with your computer and it has all the program uses of a spx reverb with lots of other stuff and the fuzzes are good too. So Yamaha made good stuff but no one bought it, glad I got one while they were still avalable. The Bass presets are great too. Nice tuner too for $75 great deal.

He's right.

Wobble definitely used a black Precision (similar in appearance to Roger Waters' black Precision) on First Issue - you can see it in the video for "Public Image", and Wobble told a story about getting his first good bass, a Precision, in an interview I read - and he probably used it on Metal Box too, though I think the Metal Box tone was achieved more with the Ampeg AEB-1 Bass than anything else. If you want an Ampeg, you'll never get one for a reasonable price - but Eastwood Guitars makes an apparently spot-on replica nowadays called the EEB-1 for a good price, usually around $700 or so.

I also think Wobble's amps were Ampeg as well.

I tend to think that that deep sound came from the amp rather than the bass itself. On First Issue, he was a beginning bass player with taste, not an expert. The guy had played an instrument for two years--max. Before that he was nothing more than a football hooligan who hung out with John Lydon.

I've got a Workman stack that does a pretty good job, but I may purchase one of the 8th street pedals to see if I can get even closer. A vintage Ampeg is out of my price range, as this is now a hobby rather than a career. Gotta keep feeding the cats.

Again, thanks for the feedback, fellas. Does anyone know whether Wobble went direct to board, or was he miked?

the copies that this guy makes are faithfull to the originals, i mean, extra long scale - you need to use special strings, he sells some. about the pickup, the original were used to they supported gut strings, but the new ones i think are made to work with flatwounds. they are more of a new improved instrument, rather than a copy. read the page, is very detailed.
so yeah, i'm a pussy.

mm, the other guitars in eastwood sound pretty ok to my ears. not "whoa that´s TONE" but good. the ampeg sounded like a 75$ samick bass.

yeah but the owner of this thread lives in MPLS, so he should be able to find a Eastwood dealer and play one for himself, never trust those samples, they are always someone wanking off to the blues, which makes me mad, dear guitar/bass companys, most of the people buying your equipment are not playing the blues...
