I've never had a problem with D'Addarios before. I think they sound great and bright for what I use them for. Then again, I play the 13s.
Oh, and fuck an Ernie Ball, the definition of planned obsolescence.

Not to drag down the discussion, but does anyone have a recommendation for stainless steel strings now that D'Addario seems to have discontinued their XLS line? Fuck.
