Its really fun to just invent your own tunings. I have a bunch of them written down somewhere. This way, your guitar playing dosent sound like anyone elses.

Timmy Taylor wrote:Starting from low to high: E, A, those are both like a regular guitar, and then E (tune your D up to E), BÞ (tune that up) and then B and E like a regular tuning. So it’s E A E BÞ B E, but the BÞ will sometimes go up to B or down to A for me and John sometimes tunes high E down to D I think. Sometimes I tune my middle E and BÞ down to D for I Could Own You but we don’t do that much anymore because that’s too much retuning.

I'm scared of them. I love the sound, I even successfully pulled off a few sonic youth tunings. But during that same session, and every other session where I've used alternative tuning I have snapped multiple strings.
So now my strat has classical guitar strings on it and sounds horrid.

Alternative tuning=Great
Shelling out for new strings=Not great.

[quote#wiggins"=]Neurosis's tuning (low)A A D G B E[/quote]

Ah, that makes sense.

I used to do that "tuned like a Rubiks Cube" guitar stuff, but I got a sitar. That and the odd Cambodian bowed instrument I have called a "W" or "Y" or something.

dunno if this has been mentioned before, but I really like tuning the A down to G, and the G up to A.

I'm a fan of (low to high) A E B F# C# C# (unison). It has a lot more range than regular tuning, and it seems to resonate more clearly.

Bump. This is a useful thread.

I've been having a lot of fun with this tuning recently on a €50 acoustic guitar. Those drones rulez. I'm curious to hear how it differs on a loud electric.

My new one that I found just fucking around is like this... Start with a normal tuning, but with everything one whole step lower (2 frets lower). Then tune the 2nd string down two more frets, and the 4th string up two frets. So from lowest to highest:

Isn't that "Drop D" tuning like on Cinnamon Girl, Jimi Hendrex and Curt Cobain used. You have rediscovered it which is very cool.
