I know I'm not the first person to say something more or less like this, but I came to this realization on my own about 8 years ago...
Do what you can to do the right thing and make the right changes where you can. Don't beat up on yourself the times when you fail. But don't get comfortable with the failing; make sure you keep doing what you can where you can.
Something like that. And yeah, pick your battles.
Something my dad used to say in response to statements like "well if xyz, then..." about how things could be different, was "yeah, and if my aunt Edna had balls, she'd be my uncle Ed". Kinda off-color way of saying "woulda, coulda, shoulda" and "it is what it is" all in one.
the only advice my grandma ever gave me was "don't ever get old". she was not thrilled to have lived into her 80's. hard advice to take, but it's her old-age-wisdom that followed a life kinda like what Viv Savage recommends.
