I consider hardcore's musical characteristics to be: (a) bass played very fast with a pick, sometimes so fast as to be strummed like a guitar, (b) nasty, raunchy, wave-of-insects power chord guitar wash, (c) "boom-chick-boom" drumming style, and (d) angry, paranoid, screaming vocals.

The two Fix 45's certainly rank among the best hardcore records I have.

They were an excellent live band. Too bad they broke up so soon.

Husker Du, at this point, were an incredible live band as well.

Seconded. Unlike Void, these guys actually had talent, right?

Husker Du's best stuff was a little bit after their hardcore era, but before their, uh, partridge family phase.

Speaking from bootleg evidence, not personal recollections, but it's hard to imagine any punk band being more powerful live than the Huskers were circa '83-'84. This is from mid '85 (nothing great from '84 on YouTube). Every show seemed like a firestorm.

I also have a bootleg dvd from around '84 in Minneapolis... raw, incredible power. However, at their best I don't think they were a hardcore band. At their best they were doing something pretty different.

I know that the Huskers and Die Kruzen played alot of shows together in the early 80s... those must have been FACE-MELTING...

I'm a big Husker fan too. I'd say Metal Circus and Zen Arcade of my favorite records ever.

How about Deep Wound? I liked that one with Mascis/Barlow
