The guy was an idiot, democratically elected or not. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Allende promote Pinochet before the coup?

If you want to make a martyr out of an incompetent politician that created yet another ridiculous attempt at a socialist utopia, and who barely new economics, fine by me. At least you could have the decency to not assume I'm some shitheel Pinochet supporter.

I think it is funny, though, that Pinochet and the free-marketeers mismanaged the Chilean economy so badly that the only way they bailed themselves out was by relying on the copper mines that Allende nationalized.

But Allende was a 'douche' and no doubt deserved all the subterfuge Nixon threw his way.

A (perhaps the) textbook example of how the "free market" fantasy and the nonsensical divisions between public/private fail to pan out in reality.

"Hi, we're the meddling government, here to reduce government meddling!"

This is not even about Allende himself. That's not why I originally posted, nor did I post about Chicago School economics. There's this mindless veneration of politicians that seems to have hit a few people on this board, since Castro announced his stepping down. Never mind the fact that what they say 99% percent of the time is either out and out bullshit, or just plain ignorance, I'm supposed to congratulate 50 years of fine, pseudo dictatorial power, or feel sorry for some politician dying a coup? Whatever. Fuck the CIA for their destabilization plan, and fuck the politicians themselves. Most of all, fuck this "revolutionary" mindset, when in the end, the situation never changes.

You suggested, no doubt sarcastically, that the CIA fucked up the Chilean economy. I posted links to declassified CIA documents pretty much confirming that, yes, they did in fact subvert the Chilean economy, but you're still on a "Allende was a douche" fix. What happened in Chile is what happened in Guatemala in '54, and Venezuela in 2002-03, and what has been attempted in Cuba for the past fifty years. The US has a history of pulling this kind of crap all over the region.

You can't believe your eyes? Fine. There's not one politician I could support if they created the kind of violence Pinochet did. Free market/Privatization or not.

Man I love Pinochet. Almost as much as I love the censorship of religion and land seizures.
