There are lots of people with genuine mental illness out there. No doubt some of these folks are in fact helped by medicine. However, I am convinced they represent as low as 10-15% of the people currently taking prescribed drugs. Business is business. If people are getting stressed or having mental issues, it's easier to throw expensive pills at them rather than telling them to improve their diet, get some exercise and improve their lifestyle. The Pharmaceutical industry is exploiting the indolence of the general public, who love to be told that their behaviour is no longer their own responsibility.

Anyone known to be on psych meds is to be regarded as a potential danger at worst or embarrassment at least, regardless of their current "normal" behavior or their positive artistic or social contributions.

48I was diagnosed with medium grade depression at 21, had been suffering through certain levels of depression since I was 10 or 11 (first time I remember telling my Mother that I was sad, and didn't know why). This diagnosis runs on both sides of my family to varying severities. My father has been on Prozac (the name brand one) since it hit the market, my uncle (maternal)committed Suicide at 36, my Grandfather (maternal) had electro shock therapy in the 50's and 60's.
I tried, Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil in my early twenties, and HATED it. Decided to just "WORK IT OUT". In my lat twenties thing's got really hard again. Spent some time in therapy, (Cog. Behaviorists, not Freudian or Jungian garbage). My shrink suggested I try Celexa (Lexapro). I LOVE it, I am me, not medicated, but free of some of the Genetic curses that have haunted my family. (Granted We're Ukrainian, Polish, Irish, or Scottish, not necessarily the cheeriest peoples on the planet)
That said, These drugs are OVER PRESCRIBED! They're a useful tool for some people, but should not be started without talk therapy involved. They should not be prescribed to adolescents.
These "studies", you can find a study to support what the fuck ever you want to say. especially on the internet. I like to think that everyone on this board is smart enough, and hip to the machinations of corporations, their media, and their Sciences, to know all this.
What motivates you all to denigrate those of us that have gained significant help from these medications? It's really a little childish and douche bag "Punk rock".
