I saw a band from Royal Oak, MI this weekend called FONTANA. They were fucking awesome. The drummer played with traditional grip. That is a surefire sign.

· modified/hacked gear is generally a good sign. like "wtf happenned to that guitar?" or "what the fuck is that keyboard filled with duct tape and with pedals attached?"
· a minimal drum kit also does it for me. (like, bass drum, snare, hihat and crash )
· a fender bass vi type instrument
· yeah, an extra drum kit
· no guitar player

Usually good signs:
Homemade gear of some kind
A bass with one pickup
Tape on the guitars
Fingerprints, sweatsalt, and/or blood on the guitars
Any kind of immobilizing device on the kick drum. The guy in the Supersuckers used to nail his kick to the floor with a twenty-penny nail. Not a big fan of their records, but I think they were great live.
Linechecking about like this: boom boom whack. Durnnn. Blang blang. Check one two and done. (This is inverse of linecheck for bad band, which is more like band practice.)
Lack of pickiness about vocal monitor
No backwards hair

Big, big fat guy usually means there's gonna be some ass-kickin. It can't be any phony, just-husky kind of fat, though; it must be a born-fat, sloppy-crazy-fat, good-time fat guy. He will rock like nobody's business.
